Larissa: City in the area of Thessalia, capital of the Larissa district and head of an homonym municipality. The word is pelasgian and means castle, invulnerable fort location. Its is built on the central east part of the Thessalia plain, on the two shores(mainly on the right) of the Pinios river. The years following the Second World War the population of the city over doubled. This is attributed to the areas fertility. The city is the commercial, industrial, transportation and administrative center of the area. Big industrial units have been built there for the elaboration of farm products, as sugar, paper and cotton. Its prevalent position makes it the transportation nodal point between Athens and Thessaloniki. It is connected with Athens, Thessaloniki and Volos by train. It is also connected by the National Highway with these cities and with other ones of the broader area. At the same time there is an airport connection with the city of Athens. Larissa has a nice structure, wonderful squares, many pedestrian streets and parks, gardens and contemporary buildings. It has 220.000 inhabitants.
