St.Eustatius St. Eustatius is a small island located 33 miles south west of the coast of St. Maarten in the Caribbean Sea. On the island you find the famous Quill, which is an extinct volcano. Besides climbing you can also explore the underwater sights by means of scuba diving. Old wrecks, pinnacles and large variety of underwater species can be found in shallow waters off the coast. There are three dive schools on the Island with professional instructors. They offer advanced as well as beginner's courses and regular dives up to three times a day. The marine park protects the waters around the Island. They have won a Caribbean Travel and Life Eco award and charge a small fee per dive to upkeep the park.

Introduction With 22.000 people living on this magnificent island, Sint Eustatius was the Golden Rock of the Caribbean. A Dutch Freeport that welcomed all nations to do their trading and store cargo. During this time raw cotton was plucked and shipped to Statia for refinement. The dark seeds needed to be removed from the white in order to process it and make fabrics. The process is called ginning and it was done on Sint Eustatius, as this island, had one of the few factories that could handle the process. For obvious reasons this factory was calleda Gin House.

Introduction Dear guest, Imagine Caribbean life in the 17th Century. Tall ships anchoring in Gallows Bay bringing out and loading all kinds of cargo brought in from throughout the West Indies and the New World, like rum, spices, cotton, indigo, silver and gold. Merchant's bustling and hassling in the narrow street of Lower Town amidst the warehouses that were build from cobblestones and lime. The Planters in their houses overlooking the sugar and tobacco fields on the upper town and sipping chilled gin in the late afternoon.
