Events at HI Austin and around Austin. Calendar of Events - 2008. Palmer Events Center. Live samba music, conga lines, and wild abandon fill the Palmer Events Center at one of the biggest Carnaval celebrations outside of Brazil. Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). Join the huge party on 6th Street, or head to one of Austin's New Orleans restaurants, such as the Alligator Grill, Gene's, the Boiling Pot, Nubian Queen Lola's, or Ms B's. South Congress Avenue. This free monthly event up and down South Congress features music, vendors, store events and some of the best people-watching in town. ATT Austin Marathon. For over 20 years the Southwest Texas Coucnil of Hostelling International has provided an environmentally and economically conscious home for travelers visiting Ausitn. This year, HI-Austin has teamed up with several environmentally conscious, local organizations such as Ecology-Action, Austin Carshare, TreeFolks, Ten Thousand Villages and The Natural Epicurean Academy, among others; to provide a casual party in celebration of sustainable living in Austin. Join us for an evening with the Girl Scouts. A few weeks before the even, a Girl Scout troop picks an interesting country to learn about. They spend time researching that country's culture and prepare a presentation and meal based on what they learn. They have an opportunity to sit down and eat a meal with the hostel's international travelers, and many of them say, It was my first time speaking to someone with a funny accent! This is a very unique evening to be a part of, please RSVP by calling the hostel if you would like to join us. Girl Scout Cultural Kitchen. Women Their Work Art Gallery proudly presents Slower Still, a solo photography exhibition by Houston-based artist Allison Hunter. In Hunter's digitally manipulated photographs, zoo animals are shown divested of their everyday settings and recontextualized in surreal surroundings. Removed from their enclosures yet still caught, framed in abstract washes of light and color, Hunter's eerily prescient animals are far from pastoral. With background details missing, the photographer's gaze feels heightened and hyperreal and Hunter's zoological subjects reciprocate that gaze from lushly captured moments slowed down, halted, frozen in time. This irreverent assault on our anguished language annually lures both veteran verbivores and naive neophytes on a passionate pilgrimage to meet their Mecca in Austin. The Artist's Market is a festive outdoor art fair held every Saturday from 10am to 6pm, which features a variety of work by local artists and craftsmen including paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, stained glass, clothing, candles and more. All works are handmade by the participating artists, no imports or resale items are allowed. Admission is free and live music is featured throughout the day. Our educational programs continue to grow as we are; teaching monthly classes at REI, broadening our programs with the Girls Scouts, and initiating a travel club at UT. Our hostel overnights have increased, bringing TrekAmerica and other International groups to stay with us. Through grants and donations, we've been able to make some substantial updates including repainting all our dorm rooms, installing a security system and purchasing new linens for all 42 beds.
