Some excerpts from the website of Longchamps that might be useful
The Hotel Longchamps is located in quiet, upscale Zamalek in Cairo, Egypt. The hotel was established by the current owner's mother who was a well know theater personality in Egypt. Hebba Bakri, the owner, completely remodeled the hotel after assuming control. Today, the Hotel Longchamps is one of the cleanest, most modern three star hotels in Cairo. Many fixtures have been imported from Germany, and the hotel sparkles with while enamel paint, brass and many loving details. We believe that at the Hotel Longchamps, you will enjoy Cairo at it's best. Centrally located, most of Cairo's sight seeing attractions and hotspots are nearby. On the Garden Terrace facing the greenery of Zamalek, you may enjoy alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Enjoy the start of the day with a rich breakfast buffet in their Restaurant included in the price of the room. The breakfast buffet includes some Egyptian items, which are ideal for vegetarians. Regular breakfast, lunch and dinner is also available in the restaurant. Laundry facilities are provided and additionally, airport pickup and delivery is available upon arrival and departure at the nominal fee of 60 L.E. (65 L.E. after October 1st, 2006)
All rooms at the Hotel Longchamps have private baths, heating and air conditioning, direct dial telephones, mini bar, internet access, cable television, sitting areas and all singles have king size beds. Executive rooms are larger and have desks. Some also have balconies.
Ismail Mohamed Street is a beautifully shaded upscale area. The view form the front terrace is grand, with colorful gardens and trees. Indeed, Zamalek is an upper class neighborhood with many private schools, embassies and consulates. It is a quiet and peaceful areas located on an island in the Nile, but very close to downtown, Historical Coptic and Islamic Cairo, including the famous Khan el-Khalili shopping district. Of course, Zamalek has its own great shopping. Within two blocks is a Christian church, a branch of the American University in Cairo's book store, and a number of restaurants including three American chains. There is a small grocery store on one side of the hotel, and a camera shop on the other. Zamalek is the northern part of Gezira Island. Gezira was mostly uninhabited and undeveloped into the mid 19th century. After the modern (central) city of Cairo was developed, Mohammed Ali built a palace and guard house at the northern tip. Apparently, there were problems with these buildings and the complex became known as As-Zamalik, which in Turkish translates to 'makeshift dwelling'. Later, the Khedive Ismail built a large palace in the center of the island with a huge garden, along with building up the sides of the island and a jetty to make access easier. At that time, the gardens contained exotic plant life and a collection of African animals, fountains, pavilions and the Gezira Salamlik. The Nile River is only a few blocks away from the Longchamps.

Everyone knows the feeling. If only renovations could be completed by magic, then everyone would be happy. Unfortunately, that happens only in fairy tales. Nevertheless, we are in the process of improving a few of our rooms for our guests, including modernizing furniture and creating what we believe will be a more relaxing, comfortable atmosphere. But doing so is simply not possible without a little disturbing noise, disorder and the typical effects of renovating. In this connection we kindly ask all our esteemed guests for their understanding within the period from June 24, 2007 through July 13th, 2007 We promise to care about you especially during these unpleasant occurrences, in order to make your stay at Longchamps as pleasant as possible. Our entire team apologizes for any inconvenience, and request your understanding. Hotel Longchamps, Cairo
