Tips for what to see and do in Barcelona. 'Las Ramblas' (The life and pulse of the city are reflected in the spectacle and colour of this celebrated promenade leading down to the waterfront). 'Sagrada Famillia' (The staggering sight of this cathedral is something you will not forget). 'Casa Mila La Pedrera' (Another staggering piece of Gaudi architecture). 'Parc Guell' (Yet more Gaudi, a covered market full of jostling crooked pillars). 'Museu Dali, Figueres' (A former 19th century theatre in Dali's home town is regarded as the worlds largest piece of surrealist art). 'Miro Foundation' (A modernist homage to Joan Miro's work in Montjuic). Drunks, Pickpockets, Expensive tourist bars along Las Ramblas. Taxidermista, Placa Reial: modern Mediteranean food (starters 4-6, main courses 7-12), such as wild forest mushroom risotto with truffle sauce, and roast boar. Lots of good tapas bars. Try Goyescas on the seafront at Hotel Arts or Ambos Mundos, Placa Reial; dishes from 2. Local wines. Cava (Spanish Champagne).

Return to main page. Barcelona celebrates the 150th anniversary this year, of its most famous architect 'Antoni Gaudi'. Probably his most famous work was the monumental and far from finished church, designed and built in the last 43 years of his life. The soaring spires look rather strange with their pink crosses on top, but you can go to the top in the lift for a fantastic view, and if you are brave enough look down you will see brightly coloured tiles, fruit, trees and animals. Not forgeting in this Magnificent City is the Nou-Camp football Stadium, where Manchester United so famously lifted The Champions League Trophy in 1999
