Some excerpts from the website of Lisdoonie that might be useful
The Lisdoonie was originally a pair of large Victorian semi-detached houses, the town side one having a large
garden surrounded by a high wall and trees. This is where we believe the name to have originated, most probaly translated as
garden on the hill in Gaellic. The earlier part of the century saw this house used as a Gentleman's
club and many of the trophys are on display in the hotel. At this point the
garden was alternately utilised as a
tennis court then a bowling green as fashion and enthusiasm dictated. A bowling trophy is mounted by the entrance to the resident's
dining room and the attached plaque shows the green in use and behind the players can be seen what is now the
TV room and
bedrooms 1 and 2. Gradually the membership declined and after the last steward and his wife passed away the building fell into disrepair, until it was bought and converted into the Lisdoonie in 1975. Unfortunately most of the
garden was either built on or made into carpark. The other semi was for many years a Christian science reading
room and many locals still remember the open bible on display in a glass case built into the Abbey road wall during this period. Under the resident's
dining room wall-paper were found religious texts and when the property was first viewed by the Cook family the downstairs
room had pews and altar all ready for services. Unusually for such a large and imposing property it was also without a
bathroom or
heating.
All the
bedrooms are individually designed and are en-
suite, equipped with
TV, GPO
telephone and
tea making facilities. The resident's
dining room is open every night and serves an interesting and varied selection of menus. There is a
TV room and seperate
lounge and
bar area for residents and small
dinner parties.

telephone. Leave the motorway at junction 36 take the A590 to Barrow. After about 25 miles you will pass throught the middle of Ulverston. Now after a few miles you will come to a large roundabout take the second exit for Barrow. At the next roundabout go straight on.(This would be the first roundabout you would arrive at if you werre coming down the the coast from Millom etc.) At the next roundabout (No3) turn left following the hospital sign. After approximately a mile you will arrive a small roundabout situated in a small dip, now turn right. You are now on the old main road(and very pretty it is too!). At the first set of traffic lights go straight on passing the Strawberry
pub and two
garages, then immediately signal right and turn into the next side road Furness Park Rd. Just a few yards up on the right is the hotel entrance.
Welcome to our site. The Lisdoonie is a true family hotel; now you are most likely to see John or Ruth but John's mother Nanette still takes an interest in the running of the hotel that the family created in 1975 out of what was a derelict property.
