Looking for a pleasant and affordable place tot stay over in Utrecht? There is a low budget hostel situated in a quiet road in the old city centre. 'Strowis' is located in a listed seventeenth century building which still contains some of its original details such as chimneybreasts and shutters, providing a warm atmosphere and a pleasant place to spend the night we offer a choice of beds in a large dormitory sleeping fourteen, or in smaller rooms with eight, six or four beds. For those looking for a little more peace and quiet, triple and double rooms are also available. On request we can provide a seperate room for female guests. On the ground-floor is Strowis' heart, the foyer, where guests can have breakfast, read or just chat. There is a small library which also contains travel information. On the computer in the foyer you can surf and mail for free. From the foyer you've got a good view on the beautiful garden. Guests can rest here near the pond after a exhausting day. Next to the foyer is a well-equiped kitchen where guests can prepare their own meal. There are free lockers available for luggage. Guests can rent a bike in strowis, a great way to explore the city and its surroundings. Information about cultural events and day trips is available at the desk. Just around the corner is de ACU, where guests can enjoy a drink, good and inexpensive vegetarian food, dancing and concerts. Reservations can be made from the hostel. The ACU is part of the same project as strowis. After years of vacancy, the building at Voorstraat 71 was squatted. The ground floor, which used to be the Automobile Centre Utrecht (ACU), was turned into a film house, a cafe, a concert venue and an information and action centre. The two top floors have been used as living space for years. In order to avoid eviction from the squat, the idea of the Voorstaete project was born in the autumn of 1993 after a congenial night of drinking. The idea conisted of buying the ACU and the piece of wasteland next to it in order to realise all plans. Plans included the realisation of living and working spaces under own management, a brewery, a pub and concert venue, a restaurant, a hostel and a city park. For this ambitious project, the Voorstate foundation was established. Through their experience in various political pressure groups, the initiators had become hardened negotiators. Of the five original ingredients of the plan, two projects were eventually realised: the political-cultural centre ACU and the Strowis hostel. The brewery was able to find another location but the city park unfortunately came off badly in the negotiations with the municipality and had to be abandoned. Family, friends, non-profit housing associations and other sympathizers gave the project financial support. After eighteen months of renovation and reconstruction by many volunteers, the project finally opened its doors to the public in the autumn of 1998.

There's a nice strowis citywalk available for 50 cents. It's an hour and a half walk and it'll take you past all the interesting sites of Utrecht city centre. The old medieval centre of the city of Utrecht is located within walking distance of Strowis. The inner city with the Dom Tower and the Cathedral has a pleasant atmosphere and is famous for its outdoor cafes along the old canals. In the Museum city district you can find a wide variety of museums and galleries. Utrecht has a sparkling nightlife. For those who like to go out, there are many cafes, discos and clubs. Hungry tourists and lovers of excellent food can find their pleasure in one of the many restaurants from all over the world, from small bars serving food to exclusive restaurants. The City of Utrecht is located in the heart of the Netherlands, and is an important railway interchange. The trains from and to Amsterdam and Schiphol airport go twenty-four hours a day. Moreover, the rest of the Netherlands can also be easily reached from Utrecht.

From Utrecht Central Station: On foot Hostel Strowis is a 15 minutes walk from Central Station. Coming from the trains, go upstairs to the station hall. Follow the signs 'Hoog Catharijne/Centrum' and later on 'Binnenstad/ Vredenburg'. At the end of the shopping centre take exit 'Clarenburg' (straight ahead, down the escalator). Cross the square to the left, and turn right into the Lange Viestraat. Cross the bridge over the 'Oude Gracht'. At the 'Neude' -square turn left into the Voorstraat. The Boothstraat is the third street on your right. By bus From the trains, follow the signs 'Stadsbussen' (city buses). City buses will take you every 5 minutes. Take line 2, 4, 8 or 11 and get out at busstop Janskerkhof.
