The Guest House is easy to reach with public transport and it is the ideal accommodation for a business or leisure stay. Located only 200 metres from the King’s Theatre, the property is at 65 Gilmore Place. By clicking through to our photo gallery to view the Victorian-tiled hallway, large drawing room with its ornate cornice, all the individually designed bedrooms with luxury en-suite facilities, you will begin to appreciate the loving restoration work that has gone into creating The Town House Guest House. Constructed in 1876 as The Manse (Minister's house) for the adjoining Church the house consists of 3 floors. The bedrooms are situated on the first and second floors and secure private car parking for all guests is located to the rear of the house. The quality of furnishings and other comforts are indicated by our Visit Scotland grading of 4 stars (****). This grading system also applies to our very select breakfast menu which offers, apart from a full Scottish breakfast, traditional porridge, local kippers (smoked herring) and Scottish fish cakes. When you visit Edinburgh, you will find a city steeped in history. In our home you will be living with it. Once occupied by an inventor called David Theo Williamson, a renowned mechanical engineer who resided at 65 Gilmore Place for a period of 30 years as a child and then having inherited the property, as father of his own family. You may be unaware of the major impact that Theo has had on all our lives. The inventor of the first amplifier with no valves and the lightweight pick-up for record players, he brought music to our ears. In an industrial engineering capacity he worked for many years for Ferranti, gaining prominence through his development of the computerised lathe. In later years he achieved recognition for his development of computerised manufacturing techniques. Theo's father was responsible for making the house one of the first in Edinburgh to have electricity. A bit of the house's history you no longer have to live with, it has like other services been replaced. We are open for business all year except Christmas. We can accommodate up to 9 guests, so we hope that having visited us through the Internet, you are able to pay us a personal visit where every effort will be made to make your stay in Edinburgh a memorable one.

The Town House - Directions By Car: Whether approaching from North, South or West, the easiest way to give directions to anybody arriving in the City for the first time, is by way of the city by- pass, which creates the land ward boundary. The by-pass is numbered the A720 and gives connections to all of the city’s arterial routes. The most convenient way to reach The Town House is the A702. Leaving the by-pass by this route you should follow the signs for the City Centre. Stay on this main road all the way into the city until you first of all see the castle on the horizon and you approach the Kings Theatre on your right. The Kings Theatre is an important landmark for you, as this is where you turn immediately left into Gilmore Place (the street sign also bears the name Lochrin Buildings). Continue along Gilmore Place for approximately two hundred metres and you will see The Town House on your left at number 65. You will require directions to our car park which is at the back of the house, so please ‘check-in first’. By Bus: The number 10 27 bus routes are along Gilmore place, both stopping approximately twenty metres past The Town House. These buses can be caught in either Princes Street (10) or in Hanover Street (27) in the City Centre. The journey from the Airport can be made via one of the frequent Airport buses or directly by taxi.
The Town House has five guest rooms. These are situated on the first and second floors of this Victorian property. All are individually decorated to the highest standard with particular attention being paid to the en-suite facilities. The single room’s en-suite bathroom has the original Victorian bath. In the Twin Room you can lie in the bath and view the stars through the glass roof. The other double rooms feature double showers and finishes in Italian tiles. All have a supply of ‘fluffy’ towels and Scottish fine soaps. All of the bedrooms have been individually designed by the proprietor and feature high quality carpets, fabrics and furnishings. Some have over-bed canopies to add that special designer touch. Fresh flowers are always on display in public areas.

Quote from The Lonely Planet Guide Cosy, comfortable and full of character! REVIEW: The Town House is a plush little place, offering the sort of quality and comfort you might expect from a much larger and more expensive hotel. It's an elegant Victorian terraced house with big bay windows, close to the theatre district on Lothian Rd, and only 15 minutes' walk from the castle.
