The family Ghiriglioni from Milan built the castle in the 13th century in this very special location. It originally encompassed an area of 5000 sqm surrounded by a circular wall with four towers, of which two are still standing today. The castle had a private port and a moat to protect its inhabitants from outside dangers. The castle repeatedly changed proprietors since 1650. The buildings housed a tobacco factory, from 1927 onwards the first free Art School of Switzerland, and then became a private residence. When the current owners, the family Ris took over in 1952, it had already been a pension for some years. At that time the Castello had a private beach and a hall, where Jakob Flach ran the Puppet Theatre of Ascona. It was here that the famous clown Dimitri started his career in 1959. In 1968 an open-air pool was built on the hotel grounds, while from 1989 to 1991 the Castello underwent complete renovation, especially in the main building, where many old granite portals and paintings in fresco were brought to light.
