Belize, formerly known as British Honduras, gained it's independence from the United Kingdom in 1981. Belize is bordered by Mexico on the north, Guatemala on the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea on the east. The official language in Belize is English, but you will also find Creole and Spanish spoken. The major attractions in Belize are: the Western Hemisphere's longest barrier reef some of the best diving, snorkeling, boating, sailing and fishing in the world ancient ruins of the Maya civilization wildlife sanctuaries dense tropical rain forests almost 600 species of birds, including keel-billed toucans abundant plant life, with over 4,000 species of flowering plants wildlife such as jaguars and howler monkeys tropical climate, palm trees, and friendly people. With a population of about 230,000, Belize remains a relaxed and intimate country. Including all the offshore cayes (pronounced keys), it's total area is 8,886 sq. miles, about the size of Massachusetts. Belize is 174 miles long and is 68 miles wide at it widest point. The average is about 79-80 degrees Fahrenheit. The rainfall in Belize varies, but it averages about 40 inches in the north, and about 160 inches in the south. The dry season varies, but it typically last from February to May in the north. Placencia Peninsula is 16 miles long, and contains a bumpy dirt road running north up to the Southern Highway. The peninsula contains the communities of Maya Beach, Seine Bight, and Placencia Village. Placencia Village is a laid-back, isolated fishing village that was accessible only by boat until 1990 when a road was carved through the jungle. About 6 miles north of Placencia Village is the small airstrip that brings tourists to the area. About 5 miles north of the airstrip is the still primitive yet peaceful and relaxing Maya Beach.
Maya Beach is in Southern Belize, Central America, on the Placencia Peninsula. Located 5 miles North of the Airstrip and 8 miles North of the Placencia Village. The peninsula is sixteen miles long with white sandy beaches and the Caribbean Sea on the east side, and a mangrove filled lagoon on the west side. COPY;2006 Taylor Made Enterprises.
