Visit York York is an ancient historic city and a vibrant modern regional centre. Whether your interest is in historic attractions, shopping, theatre, eating out or night life there is something for everyone here. History York was founded by the Romans on the site of a Brigantine settlement. The city enjoyed prominence in the Viking and Medieval periods. York's long history has left a legacy of medieval and Georgian architecture, narrow streets and a wealth of archaeology. Undoubtedly York's greatest asset is the Minster: one of the finest cathedrals in Europe with unique stained glass. You can walk around the City Centre on Medieval York's city walls. Within them the city centre is compact and largely traffic free. Right by the walls is the railway station and the famous National Railway Museum. Getting here York is less than two hours from London by train. However if you are flying to the UK you should consider Manchester Airport - it is closer and has better transport links. If you are bringing a car from the continent consider using North Sea Ferries direct to nearby Hull rather than driving through southern England. Attractions As well as tourist attractions like the National Railway Museum and Jorvik Viking Centre, there are many local amenities, and York has a beautiful hinterland including the Moors and Dales. Events York has an annual calendar of events with something for everyone. Highlights include the Viking Festival, the Food and Drink Festival and the St Nicholas Fayre. York also stages cycles of mystery plays at various times with venues that range from traditional wagons to the nave of York Minster. From A64 Leeds turn onto A1237 at the first large green sign - York North, Harrogate (A59) and Thirsk (A19). Then stay on A1237 until you get to the A19 Thirsk roundabout. At this roundabout turn right towards York city centre. From this roundabout travel towards York for 1 mile. The Beechwood Close Hotel is on your right with AA RAC signs on the trees, just inside 30mph speed limit. www.beechwood-close.co.uk. Beechwood Close Hotel 19 Shipton Road York YO30 5RE
