About Clothing and Footwear Dont forget to bring warm clothes. Cotton clothes are comfortable but they dont retain much of their warming quality when wet. Nowadays, synthetic fabrics polar, gore-tex and hollowfill, among others - are best for most clothing and they are available at a very good price. It is very important to pack a good waterproof coat, as well as comfortable water-resistant shoes (trekking boots are ideal). A good hat is advisable to protect you from the wind. It is also important to pack a pair of gloves and an extra pair of socks, even in summer. Remember to bring your sunglasses and sunscreen. Believe it or not, at these latitudes, the sun can produce severe skin and eye sunburns. About the Camping Gear Although tents are designed to be wind-resistant nowadays, it is important to have suitable stakes, for all type of terrain. Traditional sleeping pads may not turn out to be good enough to insulate you from the cold grounds of South Patagonia. Self-inflating pads are the best option. Dont forget to pack accessories such as a general purpose pocket knife, a sewing kit, an alarm clock (it will help you to avoid missing buses or excursions), a first aid kit, a water bottle, and plastic bags (for the clothes you keep in the backpack and for trash). Bear in mind that on the plane you cannot carry gas or any other stove fuel. But you can buy them in Ushuaia. Anyway, that is not a first priority problem at our campsite since there is a cooker at your disposal. Choosing a good sleeping bag avoids carrying extra blankets.
La Pista del Andino campsite is a project conceived and carried out in 1997 by Fernando Vargas - who grew up in Cordoba province - and his wife and companion Patricia Fulco, who moved in from Mar del Plata, a beach city in Buenos Aires province. They were given the concession of the premises that belong to Club Andino Ushuaia. Although Fernando and Patricia were not born in Ushuaia, they decided to settle in this magic island where they met and where they have already had two lovely children, Tamara and Tomas, who have proved to be excellent hosts. The island is mountainous and has rainy weather. The sky is almost always covered by thick clouds. The average annual rainfall in Ushuaia is about 545 mm. It is a very low value for an area seemingly so wet. This is due to the slow evaporation and the soils capacity to retain the water. The average annual temperature is 5.3 º C (41.54 º F). It may reach a maximum of 29º C (84.2 º F), in summer, and a minimum of 2.1º C, in winter (35.78 º F). The average summer temperature is 9.1ºC (48.38 º F), while in winter the average temperature reaches 1ºC (33.8 º F). It is worth mentioning that these extreme values are rarely registered. The prevailing winds blow from the west or southwest. Northerly winds are warm and the east or southeast winds are not frequent but, when they blow, they carry a nice sea smell. The weather is little predictable, to the extent that, in one day, many things can happen: the day may start with a clear skied sunrise, then the wind may blow southwestly, it may then turn cloudy, rainy, snowy, sunny again and, finally, there may be a frost at night. Considering our latitude, the length of days varies considerably from winter to summer. So, in summer, as there are more hours of light, you can do longer trekkings. + 4° / + 11° C 39.2º F / 51.8º F. + 2° / + 7° C 35.6º F / 44.6º F. + 8° / + 18° C 46.4º F / 64.4º F. + 6° / + 10° C 42.8º F / 50º F. + 5° / + 10° C 41º F / 50º F. 0° / + 6° C 32º F / 42.8º F. 2° / + 3° C 28.4º F / 37.4º F. 8° / - 15° C 17.6º F / 5º F
