THE GUNDELDINGEN DISTRICT and Bruderholz, along with the area surrounding the SBB railway station (Gundeli Nord), Dreispitz and Auf dem Wolf together comprise the southern part of Basel, where some 32000 people live and work. Gundeli, to the south of the station, is home to around 20000 people. Its main commercial artery is the Guterstrasse, a lively shopping street centred on the Tellplatz, where
businesses stay open until 10 p.m. The district is ideally located on public transport routes to the SBB railway station, city
centre, Basel- Mulhouse
airport and the German railway station (Badischer Bahnhof). Map / enlarged section
BASEL (population: 200000) is located on the upper Rhine plane. To the north lies Germany; France is to the west. Basel is thus internationally unique, straddling the intersection of 3 countries. At around 244 metres above sea level, Basel is Switzerlands lowest-lying city north of the Alps. As a result, the region enjoys the best weather anywhere in central Europe, with statistically more hours of sunshine than the canton of Ticino, in the far south of Switzerland. On reaching Basel, the river Rhine veers northwards, the flow widening as it curves into the upper Rhine plane. Basel itself lies at the nexus of north-south and eastwest communication routes. Euro
Airport at Basel-Mulhouse ties in to European and international airline networks. Map / Enlarged section
