Ees Wyke is an elegant and comfortable Georgian country house set on high ground in Near Sawrey, a holiday home of Beatrix Potter, overlooking Esthwaite Water in the centre of the Lake District. A Walk to Windermere shoreline and Rawlinson Nab. This is a lovely Lake District walk that Margaret and I did the other day. Starting from the front door, down the drive and turn right and continue past the Tower Bank Arms. Take the footpath on the right which runs parallel to the road. At the path junction head straight on and follow this in the direction of St Peter's Church. At the road turn right and follows this to High Cunsey. A very minor road. I wish I hadn't said that as now you are walking down it and the traffic is a kin to the M6 on Friday night. At the T junction turn left and on the left hand bend in the road turn right over the stile and on to the footpath which is marked and by a driveway. Follow this path over and through various styles along the shore line ending at Rawlinson Nab. This view point offers great views of Windermere and Eastern Lake District Fells. The path rejoins the road at a style. Turn right and continue along the road At Low Cunsey Farm turn left along the bridle way At the Junction of paths turn left and follow Cunsey beck on you right. At the end of the path turn right and shortly right again at Eel House. Follow this road passed Dub How Farm and at the T junction turn right. Take the next left and follow the lane uphill. At the top you should find yourself at the top of our drive. (5 miles - 8km, about 2½ hours)

A brief history of Ees Wyke. Ees Wyke was built as a Lake District retreat for a Lancashire mill owner in 1742. The Norse name Ees Wyke was given to the house, meaning east area in relation to Esthwaite Water. Wykes can aslo be a slip of land. Close by there is also an inlet on the lake known as Ees Wyke. Thwaites are clearings in a wooded area. The children's author, Beatrix Potter, stayed at Ees Wyke several times when the house was rented as their Lake District holiday home. At that time Ees Wyke was known as Lakefield. Later she purchased nearby Hill Top Farm the setting for six of her books, the first being The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Ees Wyke was a private home up until 1976, when it was converted into a hotel. With comfort care and good food it has gone from strength to strength and receives commendations in the principle guides. Looking at the map you see that there is Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey. Near and Far refer to the village's location in relationship to Hawkshead the former administrative centre. Incidentally Hawkshead is referred to, by those living in the village, as the big city!

Ees Wyke is only 2½ miles from the Windermere Ferry but during peak traffic periods you may wish to avoid the possible delays. If approaching from the North via Ambleside take the B5286 to Hawkshead, then the B5285 to Near Sawrey. Ees Wyke is on the right. From the South take the Hawkshead road from Newby Bridge at the foot of Lake Windermere. Follow the signs to Near Sawrey and turn left when you reach the village. to view a Lake District road map around Ees Wyke.
