About The Great George - History. The Pavilion was erected in 1846 by James H. Downe to be sold as a combined store and dwelling. It was purchased by merchant Henry Haszard who operated the London House from this location for the next ten years. He sold everything from parasols, corsets, and boas to
tea caddies, nails, and groceries. In 1857 Mr. Haszard moved his store to Queen Street and remodeled this property into the luxurious Pavilion Hotel. In 1864 the Pavilion had the distinction of hosting some of the delegates of the Charlottetown
Conference. Over the years it has been named the City Hotel, the Davies Hotel and since 1930, the Regent Hotel. In 1997, the building was re-opened under the name The Pavilion, to be the cornerstone of the Great George. The Pavilion Building houses twenty-
four guestrooms, the main lobby and reception area. Each morning a
breakfast buffet is served in the lobby where guests dine in comfort and elegance. Nightly, the lobby serves
drinks and acts as a popular
meeting place for guests. The Pavilion also houses the Confederation Boardroom and a small
fitness area. Hugh Perkins, cordwainer (shoemaker), bought the land in 1843 and immediately began to build his five bay, gable roofed home. It was the second house to be built on the block. Over the years it has been a private house, a boarding house, and in 1950 became part of the Regent Hotel. The Restoration of this circa 1843 property has resulted in a
Suite in a league of it's own. This exceptionally large 2 level
Suite has it all. Full
living room with working fireplace,
dining room for 8,
kitchen complete with
breakfast nook,
television room, King sized bed with walk-in
closet, 2 full
baths complete with
Jacuzzi and
Steam Shower- did we mention the private rooftop deck? This luxurious gem has been Charlottetown's best kept secret and is now available for your comfort and enjoyment. Once home to John Carroll, a tavern keeper, this building was erected before 1873. Mr. Carroll applied for a license to operate a tavern here in 1872 but was turned down. He later opened an oyster parlor which he called E'toile du Nord. It was in operation until the 1890's. The Carrol House contains three Romantic Hideaway
Suites offering ideal accommodations for honeymoons, anniversaries or a romantic escape. Each of these grand
suites have a king sized bed, fireplace and double
Jacuzzi. The Witter-Coombs House was built between 1855 and 1863 for Ellen Jane and Alexander Coombs. Mrs. Coombs advertised hand made candles for sale from her residence. The three part dormer window is original to the structure and thus helps to date it as did the board discovered during renovation covered with harsh, bright blue wallpaper largely used about 1855. The Witter Coombs
Suite houses two distinct
Suites. A Romantic Hideaway
Suite occupies the lower level of the building and a large
Family Suite occupies the second level. These unique
rooms have exposed brick and woodwork from the original structure and have been tastefully restored. The Wellington House was the
center of social life in Charlottetown during the 1820-1850 period and was a popular
meeting place for Members when legislature was in session. It was often called by its nickname, Howell's Parliament for its owner, John Howell. A later
newspaper article described it thus: Then it was (that) the Wellington, or rather Howel's as it was frequently called, was in it's glory. Rum, Gin and brandy punch were the usual accompaniments of the evening session of the Howel Parliament, lasting till far in the night. The Building style is in the Georgian tradition with a hip roof and five windows across the front. The Wellington houses
5 guestrooms accompanied by a spacious common area. This common area frequently is used for
meetings and smaller receptions. The Gillis and Stable Houses. The Gillis House was built in 1892 for local merchant P.P. Gillis who operated a stable (now the Stable House). This building was the first of four duplexes planned for the street. In 1892 each side of the duplex rented for $200.00 per year. Shortly after the house was completed, Mr. Gillis sold the stable
business owing to the stable interfering with the renting of my house. The building directly behind this building is called the Stable House, was actually the barn at that time and dates from the 1840's. Evidently Mr. Gillis had plans to tear down all the buildings in the next block (now the Great George) and build three more duplexes. Fortunately these plans did not come to fruition and the Pavilion Hotel remained and became the main building for the Great George. The Gillis House has six Executive Accommodations available for either nightly, weekly or monthly rentals. These spacious units have a
living room, dine in
kitchen, and large
bedroom. The Stable House has undergone the most extensive renovation as the building now houses four high-end
suites remodeled with a very modern flare. Stainless steel, dark rich colors, and leather
furniture have created a Manhattan feel in olde Charlottetown.
