History: The Grand Hotel Union was completed in October 1905. Designed by the architect Josip Vancas, it was then one of the most beautiful and modern hotels in Europe, equipped with an elevator, central heating and telephone, which was truly exceptional at that time. Beside the rooms bathrooms were built, they reconfigured the electrical installations, expanded and modernised the kitchen in which Italian and Swiss cooks were at work. The Union restaurant not only had first-class chefs but also excellent serving staff. In the main restaurant hall and in the saloons they organised banquets and other festivities. Union's secessionist hall was for a long period of time the biggest concert hall in Ljubljana - even in the Balkans. They arranged concerts, balls, parties, meetings, congresses, plays and exhibitions. Renovation: In 1998 it was refurbished and transformed into an elegant and modern hotel that currently boasts 194 rooms. The refurbishment was directed by the Slovene architect Dobrin, who followed the original plans and restored its Art Nouveau charm with decorative stuccoes and copies of etched glass window panes made by the world famous glazier Rehvald from Plzen.
