Some excerpts from the website of Hemingway Inn that might be useful
About The Hemingway Inn. Thank you for your interest in The Hemingway Inn in San Jos, Costa Rica. You will discover the Hemingway to be in an excellent location, in the historic quarter of San Jos, within easy walking distance of all the museums, great restaurants, the Simon Bolivar Zoo, the National Theatre, souvenir shopping, banking, the central market and the infamous night life circuit. We even provide a walking map at the front desk to help you locate nearby points of interest. An authentic Spanish mansion in Barrio Amon, the Hemingway is one of the most photographed buildings in all of San Jos. Though the city has grown around it, it was originally built as a large hacienda for the family of a wealthy coffee plantation owner in the 1920s. Still retaining its former charm, only twelve years ago it was completely renovated and remodeled to become an adorable bed and breakfast. Though none of the seventeen constantly updated guest rooms are the same, they all have comfortable beds, cable television with over 60 channels in Spanish and English (including live feeds from New York of the Big 3 US networks), telephone with free calls within Costa Rica (and ability to make international calls with a credit card). We are proud to offer new furniture, clock radios with alarms, an insured in-room safe ($3/night), and a private tiled bath with hot water shower in every room. All 17 rooms are equipped with ceiling fans to circulate the air, but heating and air-conditioning are never needed in San Jos. Rated as one of the world's great climates, we are 4,000 feet above sea level and enjoy a comfortable 72-75 degrees year -round. We are happy to offer three room typesDeluxe, Standard, and Economybased on size, ambience, and location within the hotel, depending upon ambience, size, and location. We also offer laundry service, free luggage storage, and secure gated parking ($8/day). We offer a complimentary tropical buffet breakfast on the garden patio each morning from 6 to 10 am. You will enjoy eye-opening exotic fruit juice, home-made tamales, French bread and local preserves, fresh local tropical fruits, mild white Costa Rican cheese, hard-boiled eggs, Gallo Pinto (a local rice and beans specialty), and freshly perked Costa Rican coffee. After a day exploring the sites and sounds of San Jos, relax and unwind in our Jacuzzi hot tub on the jungle patio, or keep in touch with family, friends and business with our complimentary Free Wireless Internet access. An 802.11g, Wi-Fi compatible wireless Internet access system is installed throughout the hotel. We also offer a computer room upstairs for those traveling without a laptop. Our knowledgeable bi-lingual staff can arrange for you to rent a reliable car or 4X4, or advise you on several types of educational tours. We can book your trips to the rainforests, to relax in thermal pools below an active volcano, go on a sunset cruise, or settle for the slow pace of a secluded sun-drenched beach. For the curious there is bird- and nature-watching, and for the adventurous you can climb a mountain, horseback ride or try some of the world's best (and safest) white-water rafting. The Hemingway's central location makes it a great home base to discover all that Costa Rica has to offer. Click here to read about and see photos of some of the tours we offer. Our management makes every effort to ensure that your stay impacts positively on the indigenous physical and cultural setting of this exceptional country, and thus allowing future visitors to equally enjoy the Costa Rican experience. The Hemingway is open 24 hours per day, and is about 20 minutes from the Juan Santamaria international airport (SJO) through the main highway after Real Cariari, Los Arcos and La Sabana. We are at the corner of Avenida 9, Calle 9, in historic Barrio Amon, San Jos.We offer our pick-up service transport Airport Hotel - Hotel Airport. There are one-day guided tours to the ex otic cloud forests of Monteverde or the idyllic pristine beaches of Manuel Antonio (both $125). The Jaco tour for only $76 includes crocodile sightings, entrance to the biological park, and a full afternoon enjoying all the facilities (pool, etc) of the 5-star Barcelo Ampola hotel, a big dinner buffet, and the sunshine and surf of Jaco beach. The Orosi Valley tour ( $63 with lunch, $56 and buy your own lunch) takes you to the top of smoldering 3432 meter Irazu Volcano and descend two miles vertically into breath-taking Orosi Valley, to the oldest Spanish church ruins in Costa Rica, a local museum, a look at diverse Costa Rican agriculture, and the Lancaster Gardens. You could also enjoy an informative hands-on coffee tour ($30), the La Paz Waterfall Garden/Butterfly Farm Tour ($70) and the San Jose tour showing you the highlights of the city ($29). The more adventuresome among our guests also enjoy the scenery and the thrills of the San Lorenzo rainforest canopy from their zip-line, with 17 platforms and tons of fun ($79).

From the Hemingway Inn, well-informed bilingual guides take you in an air-conditioned tour bus on an adventure through a multitude of different climatic zones. Your bus climbs the coffee- and ornamental flower-laden interior mountains to experience a bird's eye view of smoldering Poas Volcano, one of many active volcanoes in the area. Next descend the Central Cordillera Range, stopping for a Costa Rican style buffet breakfast and a walk through a butterfly and hummingbird refuge leading to the beautiful rainforest of the La Paz Waterfall Garden Park. Descend further, skirting Braulio Carillo National Forest, passing small villages, pineapple, banana, heart of palm, and sugar cane plantations to the Sarapiqui River basin for a wonderful covered boat ride. With any luck you will see giant orange and green iguanas basking in the sun, howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, small and large birds of every description and even the occasional crocodile or cayman. While waiting for the buffet lunch you can relax on a hammock beside the Sarapiqui or go for a short horseback ride. Your bus will later climb over a mile through protected Braulio Carillo National Park and have you safely back in the Central Valley and the Hemingway Inn by dinnertime. Everyone returning always talks about how wonderful Costa Rica really is, and how complete and informative the tour itself was. A great way to get a feel for some of the things that Costa Rica has to offer in a single day. ($87 per person). Please feel free to send us an email at should you have any questions about these or other tours, or if you just want some help or advice in planning your trip to Costa Rica.

WHITEWATER RAFTING ON THE PACUARE: World renowned whitewater rafting in Costa Rica is perfect for the average tourist. The warm Pacuare is my favorite river. The tour company will pick you up early in the morning from the Hemingway and have you back around dinner. A nice buffet breakfast is set out for you before you head to the river, where you are given about 15 minutes of basic instructions. You learn basic paddling commands, how to paddle as a team, and your guide/captain will explain the basics for beginners. You'll never forget the experience. The Pacuare River flows quickly along the 30 kilometer rafting course, starting at a place in the jungle just below the last big waterfalls cascading down Mount Turialba. Class II rapids are a cake-walk, Class III are fun and not very difficult. The more exhilarating Class IV are a challenge but manageable. These rivers are for tourists, not professionals, and thousands of rafts go down them every year. You are provided with a helmet, a lifejacket and a paddle. Wear tennis shoes, river shoes, or Tevas, and bring a change of clothes. You will soon be totally soaked by the warm waters of the Pacuare. While you shower and change before leaving for San Jose, they once again set out a hearty late lunch buffet (weather and space allowing, you will stop on the river for lunch before returning to base camp. Director Frank Marshall was so impressed with the scenic Pacuare River that he filmed the movie Congo (1995) here. Plans to turn the Pacuare River basin into a national park will halt other plans to flood the area with a hydroelectric dam. This is a beautiful original-growth rainforest gorge. Your $99 per person for the rafting goes a long way to encouraging the national park option. The milder Reventazon River is also available, if you think the Pacuare might be too much to handle.
