Today, Tirana is the largest city in Albania, with a population of over 320,000 inhabitants, and is the political, economic and cultural centre. What to visit: At the centre of Tirana lies Scanderbeg's Square. In a garden, in the centre of the square, stands the bronze equestrian statue of Gjergj Kastrioti - Scanderbeg, unveiled in 1968. It stands on a low pedestal of large limestone blocks, and portrays the national hero setting out to war. On the eastern side of the square stands the Palace of Culture, the largest cultural building in the country. Its construction was begun in 1960, on the site of capital's old bazaar, and was opened in l966. It has an opera and ballet theatre; the opera and ballet company was formed in 1953, on the basis of the philharmonic (1950). Albania has 7 symphony orchestras, and there are 13 smaller orchestras attached to the variety theatres and more than 40 military bands. The Palace of Culture also contains the National Library which has more than 860,000 books. The Museum of National History (opened in 1981) is situated on the northern side of the square. The huge mosaic entitled Albania, the largest in the country, symbolizes centuries-old history of the struggle of the Albanian people. Leading eastward from Scanderberg's Square is 28 Nentori (28 November) Street, on the corner of which stands the Mosque of Haxhi Ethem Bey. Its construction began in 1794 and was completed in 1823. Next to the mosque stands the Clock tower built in 1830, but reconstructed later. Leading west from the square is the Avenue of the Rruga Kavaje, on the corner of which stands the State Central Bank, established in 1945. Northwest off the avenue of the Peza Conference is the Durres Road which leads to the airport. From the south of the square runs the Avenue of the Martyrs of Nation. This has ministerial buildings on both sides. Further on is the Office of the President of the Republic, the Higher Institute of Fine Arts, and in front, at the end of the road is Tirana University, set up in 1957. Today it has about 12,000 students.
