El Coto Hotel is located in Spain, peninsular country of agreeable climate and diversity of cultures which along the history the countless people have left behind. Extremadura is a beautiful region located in the South West of Spain. Here we can transport ourselves to the Roman Empire, since we find in this region the remains of those who once lived here. The town of Guarena, with approximately 7.500 inhabitants, is at present one of the most representative towns in Lower Extremadura, and offers the visitors a peaceful, rural and hospitable environment. Its church Santa Maria, pertaining to the Renaissance period with gothic reminiscence, of extraordinary proportions, raises magestically over the rest of the urban development organization of farmer large houses of the XVI to XVIII centuries. It is also worthwhile visiting the Town Hall building, which rises not far away from the church, with its facade with elegant and sober, classical design built in granite ashlar, its strong overhanging cornice tops out with Herrerian style round ornamental elements and its central atrium. Its wide perpendicular and plain streets invite you to get lost in a peaceful walk being able to relax and breathe pure air under the Extremaduran blue sky, or to enjoy its fiestas and traditions. Popular Celebrities in Guarena: Luis (Florencio) Chamizo Triguero. (Guarena 1894 - Madrid 1945) Poet and writer, he spends most of his life far from his native Guarena, to which he never stops singing: ¡How fertile the plain where my native and how high, appears its hermitage to my eyes, (Nostalgias) Member of La Real Academia Sevillana de las Buenas Letras since the 20's, he was honoured in Madrid for his play Las Brujas. It is essential to mention, among his many lyric works, his Nostalgias and El Miajon de Los Castuos. Eugenio Frutos Cortes. (Guarena 1903 - Zaragoza 1979) Highly appreciated philosopher, professor in Caceres institute and Zaragoza university, he is famous as a poet having close relationship with the 27 generation, collaborating in journals on nation-wide basis as Litoral and many other Extremaduran journals as Alor and Genova. He is in contact with the most important poets of his time: Alberti, Lorca, Gerardo Diego, as well as with his countryman Luis Chamizo, who was greatly influenced by him.. From his abundant philosophic works La Convivencia Humana and from his lyric works La Sombra Revelada and La Vina Destruida must be pointed out. Angel Braulio Ducasse. ( ¿? - Guarena 1936) He is a regular and engaged collaborator of the newspaper HOY, published in 1930 his only poetic work named Titirimundi sentimental, estampas rurales, intimas y otros poemas. He is also the author of the book Romance hecho a la manera popular, devoted to the Christ of the Waters, Patron Saint of Guarena.

The Region: Extremadura. Merida, Roman City (20 Km from the Hotel) In the city of Merida, capital of the region, we can travel 20 centuries back in time in order to go to the theatre in the era of the Roman Emperor Octavio Augusto, or get lost in its countless monuments and museums of that period. The Roman Theatre is without any doubt the most emblematic monument of the city during the day, and it is transformed in a show which attendance is a must during the night in Merida. In order to feel yourself as a gladiator without being afraid of the beasts you only have to come into the arena of the Roman Anphitheatre or to contemplate the majesty of the Circus, with capacity for 30.000 spectators. Other nearby interesting sites (approx. 80 Kms): Caceres: City declared as World Cultural Heritage since 1986. The Main Square, the City Hall, and the Arco de la Estrella, among many monuments and buildings are worthwhile visiting. Badajoz: It is a mixture of classical and modern style with monuments as La Alcazaba, The Cathedral, Puerta Palma y other modern ones like the Extremaduran and Iberoamerican Museum of Contemporary Art. Trujillo: Monumental city with buildings and monuments such as the Main Square, San Martin Church and countless palaces and old style noble homes. Beautiful cities like Zafra, Jerez de los Caballeros, Almendralejo, Don Benito, Medellin, etc.
