One day tours in Chiang Mai. Chiang Rai is located about 800 km north of Bangkok (approx. 1 hour by plane) on the banks of the Kok River. It is the capital of Thailand's northernmost province and lies in the heart of the famous Golden Triangle. Chiang Rai was founded in 1262 by King Mengrai and has also been a capital of the Lanna Kingdom. It is a perfect base for exploring this picturesque region of mountains, forest, rivers and colorful hill tribes. Click for more. Chiang Saen belongs to Chiang Rai province and overlooks the mighty Mekong river, that forms the natural border between Thailand and Laos and just 10 km down river from the famous Golden Triangle. From the 10th to the 12th century, the town was the first capital of a regional kingdom from where some ruins still can be seen. It is a gateway for overland tours to neighboring Laos as well. Click for more. Chiang Mai is located 700 km north of Bangkok and less than an hour from the capital by plane. It is Thailand's second city and the center of the picturesque Northern region. This northern capital was founded more than 700 years ago and was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Chiang Mai is still the ideal gateway to explore the North for all kind of tours. Lampang is the second largest town in the North and located on the banks of the Wang River about 100 km south from Chiang Mai. The city's history dates back to the 7th century and is famous today for its horse drawn carriages that are still partly used for public transport. Sukhothai lies 440 km north of Bangkok, resp. 60 km west of Phitsanulok and was the first capital of Thailand in the 13th century. A famous stopover on Bangkok-Chiang Mai overland tours, but can also be reached by daily short flight from Bangkok or Chiang Mai. It's main attraction is the Historical Park with its magnificently restored ruins of monuments, palaces and temples. Click for more. Mae Sai, located just a bit less than 900 km north of Bangkok or only 60 km from Chiang Rai, is not only Thailandi's northernmost, but also an important, bustling market- and border town to Myanmar (Burma). Mae Hong Sorn This picturesque province lies to the northwest corner of Thailand, approx. 250 km (mountainous roads) from Chiang Mai. The province town (3 daily flights to/from Chiang Mai) is famous for the picturesque Shan temples, Paduang women ('longnecks') and colorful ethnic tribes who come from the mountains sell their products. Mae Sariang This sleepy, little town belongs to Mae Hong Sorn province and is beautiful located in the Yuan Valley, approx. 200 km southwest of Chaing Mai. It is mostly used for an overnight stop on a Mae Hong Sorn loop or on the way to Mae Sot border town. An ideal gateway for a boat trip on the scenic Salaween River, which forms the border with Myanmar (Burma) and is less than one hour drive away from town. Click for more. Pai This little town lies in the Pai Valley, approx. 150 km northwest of Chiang Mai on route to Mae Hong Sorn and can be reached on steep and winding roads. The beautiful surroundings invites for many activi-ties and is a perfect gateway for trekking, rafting, cycling etc. For a long time only a favorite with back-packers it has now become a bit more popular in general. Nan Lies in the valley of the river Nan, approx. 300 km northeast of Chiang Mai (4 flights a week and daily to/from Bangkok) and was founded in 1368. It is one of the more remote areas of the North sharing a long border with Laos to the east. Most of the province is covered by heavily forested mountains. Phitsanulok Lies 400 km north of Bangkok (daily flights), resp. 300 km south of Chiang Mai (3 weekly flights). The province town is an important center of business and communications between Bangkok and the north, as well as a gateway to nearby Sukhothai. An attraction are the floating houses on the Nan River, where still part of the city's population lives and Wat Mahatat with its all over Thailand famous Buddha image. Click for more. Phayao This small and peaceful province lies about 150 km northeast of Chiang Mai and is virtually enveloped by mountains and valleys. Until 1974 it was part of Chiang Rai province. The town of Phayao is located on the banks of the picturesque Kwan Phayao, the largest fresh water lake in the north with clear and clean water. Numerous food shops along the lake are suitable for dining and relaxing. Click for more. Phrae Is located approx. 200 km southeast of Chiang Mai and south of Nan province. It was founded some 800 years ago and has an old city, which is surrounded by a moat. Today the town with many quiet lanes and some old teak houses is famous for its local wood and rattan industry, as well as for its beautiful surroundings that include caves and waterfalls. Mae Sot This market- and border town on the banks of the Moei River is located in the west of the country, approx. 450 km north of Bangkok (daily flights) or approx. 350 km southwest of Chiang Mai (4 flights per week). Thaton A small village in beautiful surroundings near the Thai-Burma border, 170 km north of Chiang Mai city and straddling the banks of the Kok River. The south bank is dominated by giant Buddha images over-looking the valley and nearby Burmese mountain wilderness. It is populated by Thais and ethnic Shan people. Doi Angkhang This hill top station, 1300 meters above sea level, is located approx. 165 km north of Chiang Mai. Most famous for it's royal farming project to support poor farmers and hill tribes. The cool climate supports fruits and vegetables, which usually can not be found in this country.
