About Bear Mountain Lodge. After an eventful day you can lounge on one of the lodge's expansive portals or enjoy mountain views from a private balcony. Credit: R.E. Maurer. It adds to the experience of staying at the lodge to know that while you're having a wonderful time you're helping to protect the wilderness around you. Steve Larese, National Geographic Traveler. Our Colorful Past Originally built as the Rocky Mountain Ranch School in 1928, Bear Mountain Lodge boasts a long and colorful history. In the 1930s, the lodge was as an exclusive country club and hotel featuring tennis courts, a swimming pool and a golf course. After changing hands several times, Bear Mountain Lodge re-emerged in 1938 as a dude ranch. One owner even advertised cougar hunting expeditions. In 1959, Myra McCormick and her husband Fred, who died in 1978, bought the property and operated it as theBear Mountain Guest Ranch for 41 years. An avid birder and legendary proprietress, McCormick donated the property to The Nature Conservancy prior to her death in October 1999. Our Renovation In March 2001, Bear Mountain Lodge re-opened after undergoing an extensive eight-month renovation. The lodge was updated and enlarged with the goal of retaining its 1920s charm and historic integrity, including hand-hewn beams, an eye-catching pine staircase and remarkable stone fireplaces. All the tables, chairs, headboards and armoires were made locally by Santa Clara Woodworks out of small-diameter trees that were cut as part of a forest restoration project. A total of eleven luxuriously furnished rooms are located in three separate buildings -- the Lodge, Myra's Retreat and the Wren's Nest. Hardwood floors run throughout -- the hickory floor in Myra's Retreat is particularly striking -- and sunlight fills each room. The bathrooms feature soaking tubs and 1920s period ceramic block tile. Four rooms offer private balconies and others open on to an expansive portal. The stone fireplace in the Bear Mountain Lodge Great Room. Credit: Mark Erikson.
