The patron saint of Navarra Francisco Javier de Jaso y Azpilicueta was born into a wealthy family of nobles in the Castle at Javier on the 7th of April 1506. At the age of 19 he went to study at the University of Paris where he was an outstanding student. In 1528 Ignatius Loyola arrived at the same College of Saint Barbara. It was he who initiated the definitive change in Francisco's life. Six years later, on the 15th of August, Francisco, Ignatius Loyola and another five students went to the Chapel at Montmatre to take the triple vow of Poverty, Chastity and to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. After completing their studies the students reuinited in Venice, where Francisco was ordained as a priest on 24 of July 1537. However after continuing difficulties with their plans to go to the Holy Land they put themselves at the disposition of the Pope. Their fame grew through their preaching and and help to the sick and most needy, and King John II of Portugal chose members of Francisco's group to go to his new territories in India. On the 6th of May 1542 he disembarked in Goa. He spent three years with the fishermen in the south-east of India and afterwards went to the coast on the south-west where he baptized more than 10,000 people. In 1545 he travelled to the Malayan archipelago, from where he visited other islands to create more missions. Francisco wanted most to visit Japan, a country only visited by Europeans five years before. In Malcasa he held conversations with Yagiro, a Japanese who had a great interest in Christianity, and together they entered the port of Kagoshima on the 15th of August 1549. Francisco worked with great enthusiasm, but after not receiving a letter for more than two years returned to India, leaving 2,000 Christians in 5 communities. In his last voyage his intention was to enter China, but he died of a fever on the island of Sancian, 3rd of December 1552. Francisco Javier was named Patron Saint of the Kingdom of Navarre in 1621. Pope Pius XII named him Patron Saint of tourism on the 14th of June 1952.
