The Panathenaikon Stadium, built on the remains of an ancient stadium from the 4th century BC, hosted the first contemporary Olympic
Games in 1896. The Theatre of Dionysos, constructed in the 6th century BC and the Theatre of Herodes Atticu, built under Roman rule in the 2nd century AD, next to the Acropolis. The Keramikos, the cemetery of ancient Athens, features many beautifully decorated tombstones, the walls constructed under Themistocles in 478 BC, as well as the Dipylon Gate and Sacred Gate. There is also a museum in Keramikos. The majestic Zappion Hall built in 1888, which is surrounded by a park. The Greek Parliament, formerly the Royal Palace built in 1840, overlooks Syntagma Square and The Old Parliament on Stadiou Street is one of the best samples of neo-classical architecture. It was used as the seat of Parliament from 1875 to 1932. The Anglican church of St. Paul, built in 1842, The National Archeological Museum, one of the world's greatest museums with a unique collection of ancient Greek art, The Byzantine Museum, The National Art Gallery Museum and the Museum of Greek Folk Art. centre. This 11th-century monastery was built on the ruins of a 6th-century church and features precious wall paintings that are excellent samples of Byzantine art. The Romantic Poseidon Temple at Cape Sounion. The temple, dating back to the 5th century BC, is built on a clifftop at the southern tip of the Attica Peninsula, offering a spectacular view of the Aegean Sea. The archeological site of Vravron features a temple and other buildings dedicated to the worship of Artemis. There is also a small museum near the site. The ancient town of Thorikos, with one of the oldest theatres ever found built in the 6th century BC, and Lavrion, a major silver mining
centre in ancient times. The Tomb of the Marathon Warriors serves each year as the starting point of the Athens Marathon Run. This was the site of the victorious battle of the Athenians and their allies against the invading Persians in 490BC. Full-day
