Book Sneaton Castle Centre

During your visit to Sneaton Castle Centre you will be able to discover a wealth of heritage and unspoilt beauty. Situated deep in Captain Cook Country, a visit to the nearby ancient harbour of Whitby is usually first on the agenda here in his youth, Cook learned many of his skills of the sea. Perched high on the cliffs overlooking the historic port is the ancient Abbey of Whitby, built during the 13th and 14th Centuries and which stands on the site of the monastery founded in 657, home of St.Hilda and Caedmon. Inland from Whitby you can set out to discover and enjoy 'Heartbeat Country' the heather-clad moorlands and rolling hills that are part of the wide expanse of the North York Moors National Park. Staff at the Centre will be only too pleased to provide you with the information you may need to explore this truly outstanding area of Britain. The countryside and the coast and their picturesque old villages have changed little since Cook's boyhood. Also, don't forget the shop at the Centre has a comprehensive range of maps and guides. ©Yorkshire Tourist Board. North York Moors National Park

The Learning Zone is available to both school and youth groups resident in the Centre and those who wish to come for a half or full day visit. Staffed by qualified teachers, we offer teaching activities specific to each topic, in high quality surroundings. The Learning Zone provides an environment in which students of all ages and abilities can learn about St Hilda and the Anglo Saxon times in which she lived, about Whitby as a religious centre over the centuries, about the life and work of the modern religious community which lives here. A visit to medieval Whitby Abbey can be included. It is possible to study many aspects of the National Curriculum in a lively and stimulating way. There are displays, models, and hands-on activities. The sessions are inter-active, with students able to dress up as monks and nuns, enjoy medieval food and engage in activities appropriate to the times being studied. It is possible to use the sisters chapel for learning about a place of worship, for drama and to have a short time of quiet reflection. A menu of topics is available on request.
