However, findings from the Bronze Age are a sign that people already lived here in earlier times. Permanent settlement followed around 1300. The first settlers were Walser, who came from the Swiss Wallis. The village is named after the river Lech. This name derives from Licca which means stone water. The population lived exclusively from dairy farming and stockbreeding. Only after the construction of the road over the Flexen pass (1895 - 1900) their future prospects improved. The population experienced the first sings for an economic upturn when skiing became popular around the turn of the century. In 1906 the first skiing course was held for locals by Viktor Sohm. In 1925 the ski-school of Lech was founded. The first ski-lift was built in 1939. This small settlement in the Alps developed into a winter sports centre of international fame. After the second World War there was a run on Lech by guests from all over the world which was cause for strong expansion. Not least, Lech owes its international fame also to its numerous top athletes and Olympic champions.

In the summer from the middle of June until the end of September blooming meadows, majestic peaks, crystal clear streams and houses decorated with flowers form the picture. Tennis courts, the romantic swimming pool in the forest with a slide for children, hiking busses to the mountain lakes, chairlifts and funiculars as well as guided hikes and tours are free to use for all the guests of Lech. The wide variety of children- and adventure-programs are ideal for families. Events like concerts on the picturesque place in front of the church, a ride with the floating bar to the highest casino of the Alps as well as special excursions to the Festival of Bregenz and the Schubertiade grant entertaining holidays.
