Frequently Asked Questions and Useful links to other Edinburgh and Scottish resources. Where can I park my car nearby? Glenfinlas Street There is short term parking at the door of the house, but tickets can only be bought for up to two hours. You buy a ticket from a machine and display it in the car. If you wish to leave a car for longer there is secure 24 hour car parking about ten minutes walk away. Lothian Road There is secure 24 hour parking in Semple Street behind the apartment, on Castle Terrace and at the EICC. If possible, please don't bring a car to Edinburgh. All of the main attractions are easily reached from Glenfinlas Street and from Lothian Road, the public transport system is very good, and taxis are easily available. There are maps on this website to help you. Is there a phone in the apartment? Glenfinlas Street and both Lothian Road apartments have payphones. Glenfinlas Street is a coin operated phone and is charged at BT rates. If you plan to stay for a few days in the UK, a prepaid card which allows 0800 toll free access is recommended. Lothian House apartments have credit card phones with modem access. Do the apartments have washing machines / dryers? Glenfinlas Street has it's own laundry room with a washer / dryer. Lothian House has a laundry with coin operated washers and dryers on the first floor of the block. How do I get from the airport? Glenfinlas Street / Lothian Road The airport bus drops off at Shandwick Place, which is 2-3 minutes walk from Glenfinlas Street or 5 -8 minutes from Lothian Road. Airport taxis cost about 15 GBP and take about 30 minutes. There is a link to the airport bus site below. How far is away is the rail station? Glenfinlas Street / Lothian Road The main railway station is Waverley and it is approximately 1.2 km away from both apartments. Waverley is at the east of Princes Street and the apartments are both at the west end of the street. A taxi would take less than ten minutes and cost 6-8 GBP. What happens during the Edinburgh Festival? What doesn't happen! The festival started as an artistic festival with opera, classical music and art exhibitions. Now, the Edinburgh Festival includes the Book Festival, the Fringe with alternative comedy and music, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Film Festival. For the month of August, Edinburgh is the centre of the arts in the UK. Links to all of the festivals are given below. How far is the castle? The castle is 10 minutes walk from both apartments. The castle overlooks the main shopping street, Princes Street. What is the best way to see the city? There are lots of bus tours around the city, and most of them allow you to get on and off as often as you wish. The best tactic is to take the full tour and understand the layout of the city, then spend some time visiting the main sites, once you know where they are. The city is quite hilly, so use the bus to take you to the castle, then walk downhill on the Royal Mile! Is the city safe? The centre of Edinburgh is still residential, so there are always people around and there is very little crime in the city centre. We wouldn't stay here if that wasn't the case. Can we tour Scotland from Edinburgh? Most of Scotland can be reached from Edinburgh in one day, the exceptions are the Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. We have put together some one day excursions from Edinburgh and would recommend these as a way of seeing some of the sights of Scotland. They are to the centre and coast of Fife and St Andrews (. ) and to Stirling, Callander and the Trossachs (. ). In addition, day trips are recommended to the Borders, to Glasgow and to the whisky towns of Speyside. Is there much golf nearby? All of the most famous scottish golf courses are less that 2 hours drive away and many are less than 1 hour from Edinburgh. They include the courses at Muirfield, Dalmahoy, Gleneagles, St Andrews, Carnoustie, Troon and Turnberry. There are over 60 golf courses in the Lothians alone. for a list of the nearby golf courses.
