A cruise along the Danube. The Danube river is the second longest river in Europe. It links nine European countries and four capital cities. Under the reign of the Roman emperor Vespasian the city started its life as a fortification port. It was Sexaginta Prista the Port of sixty ships. Even today, along with the dynamics of technical progress, the river has preserved its ancient glory. A cruise along the Danube is a real experience. The tourists have the opportunity to observe the picturesque banks and islands, overgrown with willow forests. They will see Russe port, the Shipyard, the riverside part of the city, the Romanian town of Giurgiu with its port, the Danube Bridge connecting Bulgaria and Romania. Panorama of Russe from the TV tower. The TV Tower is situated on one of the heights in the periphery of the city. It is 206 meters high and is the highest TV tower on the Balkans. A spheric cocktail-bar is situated at the 100th meter. There is a fine view from it at the city and its environs. Romanian town Guirgiu can be seen, too. Part of Stara Planina can be observed with the help of optical instruments when the weather is fine. The TV Tower is known for the boutique cocktails the bar offers. Urban life style of Russe - end of XIX, beginning of XX century museum exhibition. The exhibition is dispositioned in a house from the period of Bulgarian national revival, built 1866. It represents part of the life style of the wealthy citizens of Russe, strongly influenced by the European culture at the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century. Expensive articles, made of china, glass and silver are exhibited on the first floor. Clothes and accessories to them, corresponding to the European fashion trends of that period are shown. National museum of transport and communications. The National Museum of Transport and Communications has been established an the occasion of 100-year anniversary of railway transport in Bulgaria. It was opened on 26 June 1996. It is the only one of its kind in Bulgaria. The Museum is situated in the building of the first railway station in Bulgaria, constructed along the Danube bank and announced nowadays for a record of the past. Interesting exponents that display the history and development of transport and communications in Bulgaria are exhibited in the three sections of the Museum railway transport, river navigation and communications (post office, telegraph, telephone, radio, television). Visit to Holy Trinity Cathedral in Russe. The Holy Trinity Cathedral was built in 1632. It is one of the greatest sights of Russe due to its ancient history and unique architecture. The guests of the Cathedral who enter it go down stairs four and a half meters below land surface instead of going up as it is in most churches. One can hardly imagine the striking impressiveness of inner spaces by watching the church from the outside. The proportion ratio harmony in space and the exquisite architectural style impress and excite strongly. There is a museum exhibition in the Cathedral where ritual articles and clothes as well as church book, including original Gospel from the XVI century, in which the date of building the church is recorded, are exposed. St. Pauls Catholic Church. The church was built in 1892 and designed by architect Valentino. The style is Neogothic. Gothic cruciform vault archs, ornament wall-painting decoration, wood-craving altar, crystal chandeliers, multicolored stained glass, authentic icons make impression in the interior. St. Dimitar Basarbovski Rock Monastery. The Monastery is situated in the rock nearby the Russenski Lom river, close to the village of Basarbovo, 8 km away from Russe. The earliest historic data where the name of the monastery can be traced date back to the XV century. It is hewn into the rock massif. 48 rock steps lead the way to the monastery. The basic premise is divided into few sections. On the one side the cave church with modern carved iconostasis is situated, and from the other part two monastic cells can be entered through an open cave. On the right side of the church the monastic sepulcher can be reaches by few stairs. There are two caves and two rooms built in the ground floor. Archeological Reserve The Rock Churches of Ivanovo /XII XIV century/. St. Archangel Michael Rock Monastery is situated near the village of Ivanovo, 20 km south from Russe. It consists of dozens of premises hewn into the rock along the Valley of Russenski Lom River and is one of the biggest and best preserved Bulgarian rock monasteries. Frescoes from XIII and XIV century are preserved in six of the monasterys churches and chapels an are inscribed in the UNESCOs list of world cultural and historic heritage due to their high qualities. The most famous among them are those in St. Virgin Mary church, drawn in the middle of XIV century after a donation by the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander. These wall-painting mark one of the heights of Bulgarian Medieval art. Archeological Reserve Medieval Town of Cherven /XIII XIV century/. The medieval town is situated on a high hill in the canyon of the Cherni Lom river at the village of Cherven, 35 km south from Russe. Ruins of big Byzantine fortresses from the VI century are preserved. The small settlement left continued its development and during the period of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom it transmuted into big town of Cherven, one of the leading military, administrative, economic, religious and cultural centers in the country. Archeological excavations reveal the ruins of a big number of dwellings, 13 churches, administrative buildings, a feudal castle within the borders of the town, underground water supply channels, fortifications, etc.
