Wagtail Farm is a working mixed hill farm situated in the narrow part of the SSSI Coquet Valley opposite the National Trust Cragside Estate. The walking route, St Oswalds Way, passes through the 630 acre farm which is only one mile from Rothbury centre. There is a herd of 70 suckler cows and two flocks of sheep; a Mule inbye flock and a Blackface hill flock. There is a very small amount of winter barley grown for feeding to our own livestock plus hay and silage. A large part of the farm is under a Countryside Stewardship Scheme whereby moorland regeneration, rare upland hay meadows and permanent pasture are all managed. Public access is also allowed through pastures with ancient ridge and furrow and an iron age fort. Apart from that, the views towards the Simonside Hills, Cheviots and the North Sea are an added bonus. for more photos of our farm.

Wagtail Farm is very close to Cragside House and Country Park. Cragside House was once described as;The palace of a modern magician;. Its interior featured state-of-the-art hydraulics powering both a revolutionary new lift system and the internal telephones which so mesmerised guests. Cragside was the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electric power, using man-made lakes and underground piping. for more information. We are also on the very edge of Simonside Hills allowing our guests to have breathtaking views of the dramatic sandstone formation. The range dominates the skyline forming a dramatic southern backdrop to the middle reaches of the River Coquet. Walkers who climb the hills are rewarded with the whole panorama of the Cheviots to the north and from the top of Simonside itself the whole Northumbrian coastline is revealed. Other attractions nearby include Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Chillingham Castle and Dunstanburgh Castle.
