Muirfield, where the 2002 Open Championship is to be held, and Gullane are both on the coast approximately 10 - 15 miles away. Many golf clubs in and around Edinburgh are open to the public. Prestonfield Golf Course is a two-minute walk away and we will be happy to reserve a round of golf, lend you clubs or secure them for hire from the club professional with advance notice. Guests of The Dunedin Guest House have complimentary use of nearby tennis courts and, for a small fee, may access The Royal Commonwealth Swimming Pool, which also includes saunas, a full fitness centre, Olympic-sized pool, diving pool and children's pool. RESTAURANTS AND EATING OUT. In the immediate vicinity of The Dunedin Guest House, there is an extensive range of eateries ranging from carry out fish and chips to many top class restaurants. There are eight restaurants of different nationalities-each one better than the next-within walking distance, with prices that compare favourably against those in the city centre. There are also traditional pubs in the area. Menus for Edinburgh's restaurants are readily available and we are happy to make reservations or recommendations for our guests. CINEMA, THEATRE CONCERT VENUES. There are several cinemas showing current release and foreign films within easy access and no more than ten minutes from The Dunedin Guest House. In recent years, the city has played host to many international movie stars holding their premiers here in the Capital. Edinburgh has long been recognised for the wide diversity of performances on offer at any one time. These range from top musicals straight from the west end of London to international opera companies. Edinburgh has also been recent host to many international performers, from Jose Carreras to The Rolling Stones. There is always something of interest in this beautiful city throughout the year
The Dunedin Guest House is a semi-detached Victorian Villa located on a large sunny corner with gardens and a lovely view of Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags. Built as a family home in 1882, the three-story house was divided into two homes in the 1950's and returned to a single dwelling around late 1980s. Sympathetically converted into the present accommodations, the house is a listed building and therefore retains such original features as a magnificently lit cupola that dominates the central staircase and gives the house an airy spaciousness. Other original features are the mosaic-tiled entrance and vestibule, ornate cornicing and a spectacular plasterwork thistle ceiling in the breakfast room. Original woodwork prevails throughout the guestrooms, as well, with massive Canadian pine doors, panelling and dados. The Dunedin Guest House has seven bedrooms, all with private facilities, and can accommodate a maximum of 18 guests comfortably. When we acquired the house in 1999, a programme of refurbishment began, resulting in its present rating from the Scottish Tourist Board as a Four Star Guest House. Each guestroom is individually decorated to a high standard. Toiletries, radio alarm clocks, colour television, hairdryers, tea and coffee-making facilities, big fluffy towels, washcloths, individual temperature control and other comforts are at each guest's disposal. A welcoming fire in the grate greets you as you arrive in the spacious and well-appointed breakfast room each morning. Our a la carte breakfast menu, included in the room tariff, is extensive and includes many Scottish delicacies such as porridge, haggis and potato scones, as well as a traditional breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast, all cooked fresh to order. We also offer options to satisfy those with a vegetarian diet. Given advance notice we are happy to cater to other special dietary requirements.
Each August, the world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo hosts different performers from all corners of the globe performing in the open at the Castle. This is a spectacle not be missed with tickets disappearing very quickly. The Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinburgh International Jazz Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Edinburgh Book Festival also all take place during the month of August. The Royal Mile fills with market stalls and street performers give free shows daily. The city comes to life with a wonderful Bohemian atmosphere during this month with many places staying open 24 hours a day-an insomniacs dream! CHRISTMAS NEW YEAR (HOGMANAY). In the run up to the festive season, Edinburgh is transformed with an outdoor ice skating rink in Princes Street Gardens, a German market, a French food market and Carnival. This brings a wonderful European flavour to the Capital and a splash of colour to those long winter days. At New Year, Edinburgh hosts the biggest street party in the world. Traffic into the city centre is restricted and Princes Street Gardens is the venue for many different concerts to suite all tastes. Street performers arrive from all over the world and a torch light procession on December 31 heralds in Hogmanay, as the New Year is known in Scotland. The most spectacular fireworks display imaginable takes place at midnight. RUGBY UNION SIX NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP RUGBY LEAGUE. Every year Edinburgh plays host to the Six Nations Championship with Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy all participating. For two consecutive years, the city has played host to the rugby league final from England. Tickets are usually available to attend these games.
