Society of Macedonian Studies The Society of Macedonian Studies, one of Thessaloniki's most important cultural institutions, collects, preserves, studies and publishes a linguistic, folkloric, historical, archaeological and general archive and promotes traditional Macedonian art. The Society of Macedonian Studies houses a valuable Picture Gallery collection on the top floor of the theatre, including 300 paintings, sculptures and engravings by Greek and foreign artists. European Centre of Byzantine Monuments The European Centre of Byzantine Monuments, housed at the Museum of Byzantine Culture, conducts European and International - level scientific research in the fields of museology, conservation and restoration. Thessaloniki State Orchestra The Thessaloniki State Orchestra was established in 1959 under the name Symphony Orchestra of Northern Greece as part of Thessaloniki's State Conservatory. In 1969 the orchestra was nationalized and took its current name. Today, the State Orchestra is made up of about 100 musicians with outstanding performances within Greece and abroad. National Theatre of Northern Greece Founded in 1961, the National Theatre of Northern Greece (NTNG) was the first theatre in the country to introduce an alternative repertoire. The National Theatre includes the Drama School - a modern stage for young and talented actors - the Children's Theatre and the dance ensemble Aenaon Dance Theatre of Daniel Lomel. These three departments stage performances on a regular basis. Moni Lazariston (Monastery of Lazaristes) Moni Lazariston complex, an impressive entertainment and culture venue of the city, was established by monks of Saint Vincent Battalion of Paul in 1886. In 1980 the complex was declared a protected monument due to its historical and architectural importance, and in 1997 it opened its gates to the public as a venue for theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions and other activities. Concert Hall of Thessaloniki An impressive building right by the sea, Thessaloniki's Concert Hall is fully equipped as a host of concerts, dance and theatre, opera, art exhibitions and conventions. It includes a main hall of 1464 seats with exceptional acoustics, an impressive foyer, administrative and technical service offices and supporting facilities.
