Then follow the signs for Kantonspital, take the underpass next to the Hilton/Post and cross over the viaduct. Turn right at the first traffic lights and drive back about 50 metres until you reach the hotel. If you are taking the motorway from France: Continue to the end of the motorway (customs). Then follow the signs for City, driving past the Spalentor (mediaeval city gate). When you reach the National-Versicherung insurance company building, take the left-hand lane, turn left at the traffic lights and continue about 50 metres until you reach the hotel. Hotel Steinenschanze ist more than just a hotel! COMPAGNA, a charitable society founded in 1886, helps people in Basel in difficult life situations. The society provided over the years different services and adapted them continuously to meet changing needs. One facet of COMPAGNA is SOS Railway Station Assistance at the central railway station in Basel. For more than 120 years this service has been helping travellers of all ages, in particular elderly and disabled people, youth and children. A second service of COMPAGNA is the Counselling Agency for Binational and Intercultural Couples and Families. For more than 30 years the professional advisors of this agency have been obtaining and providing information to those seeking advice on cultural, social and legal issues facing binational and intercultural couples and families. The third service of COMPAGNA is ALIENA, the Counselling Agency for Women in the Sex Business. Set up four years ago, ALIENA counsels and helps these women, many of them migrants, in difficult situations of their daily life, particularly in health and legal matters.
