The Old Brewery Gallery. A Collection of fine art originals, reproductions, and old photographs primarily of Richmond North Yorkshire. Richmond with its dramatic Norman castle resting on its rugged crag above the river Swale is nothing if not picturesque and has captured the attention of artists throughout the ages. Many of those artists have recorded the scene from right outside our front door. The view across the green to the castle has provided much inspiration and indeed has inspired us to start this collection. Oil Paintings Artist: W.Stuart Lloyd R.B.A. (1875-1929) Nationality: English Title: RICHMOND CASTLE, AN ANGLER AND HIS FAMILY IN THE FOREGROUND RICHMOND CASTLE IN THE DISTANCE Date: c.1825 Medium: Oil on canvas (a hand painted copy of the original) Dimensions: Image, 51.5cm by 76.5cm. Framed Price: £595.00 excl VAT. Mounted Price: £395.00 excl VAT. Artist: Victor Pasmore (1908 -1998) Nationality: English Title: The Quiet River: The Thames at Chiswick Medium: Oil on canvas (a hand painted copy of the original) Dimensions: H/W 450 X 580mm. Framed Price: £250.00 excl VAT. In the mid-1940s Pasmore painted a series of views of the Thames at Chiswick. In doing so he was following a tradition which goes back to nineteenth century painters, including Turner and Whistler. Pasmore was aware of these precedents when he worked on the series and, like those artists, concentrated on the subtle light variations and the atmosphere of the scene. The timeless romanticism of the diffused light and the horse and cart belie the reality of the place, which was then an industrial area: the dark form on the right is the roof of an especially malodorous vitamin factory. Watercolours This reproduction of one of England's most famous painters work is the pride of our collection. So good is the quality of the archival paper and the excellent giclee printing technique that it is absolutely undistinguishable from the original. Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner Nationality: English Title: Richmond Castle and Town Date: c.1825 Medium: Watercolour Movement: English Watercolour Dimensions: Image H/W 275 x 397 mm (10.75 x 15.75) Mounted 485 x 635 (19 x 25) Framed 560 x 700 mm (22 x 28) Framed Price: £595 excl VAT. Richmond Castle and Town, Yorkshire Richmond may have been the very first of the Picturesque views to be painted; it was certainly among the first to be engraved. Turner shows the ancient town and castle bathed in morning light, crowning the hilltop in perfect harmony with its surroundings. The power of the rushing river Swale is suggested by the haze of spray rising above the falls; its energy powered the mills partly hidden behind trees to the right, buildings of interest to Turner as for a time they were used for paper making, but later converted to other uses, like the old brewery Guest House. The milkmaid in the foreground seems to be Turner's playful reference to the popular song The Lass of Richmond Hill; she provides a telling counterpoint to the castle keep, showing Turner's intention to embrace all classes of society in his great work. Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner Nationality: English Title: Easby Abbey Date: c.1825 Medium: Watercolour Movement: English Watercolour Dimensions: Image H/W 275 x 397 mm (10.75 x 15.75) Mounted 485 x 635 (19 x 25) Framed 610 x 765 mm (24 x 30) Framed Price: £595 excl VAT Mounted Price: £250 excl. AVAILABLE SOON Artist: A G Ackermann R.I. (1876-1960) Nationality: English Title: A VIEW OF RICHMOND NORTH YORKSHIRE, WITH THE RIVER SWALE IN THE FOREGROUND Date: c.1825 Medium: pencil and watercolour Dimensions: Image 325 by 500 mm Framed Price: excl VAT Mounted Price: excl VAT. Original Prints If you travelled on a train in the late forties and fifties the individual compartments of each carriage were decorated with prints of watercolours depicting scenes of Britain painted by renowned artists of the day.
