Fresh air, a multiplicity of nature and a historical, cultura centre. The Backaskog Castle is located on a narrow neck of land between two glittering lakes. Monks built a monastery on this location in the 13th century. They combined the monastery life with outdoor activities and lived by farming, fishing and gardening. In 1537, during the Reformation, the monastery was closed down by the Danish Crown. The noblemen Henrik Ramel and his son Henrik Ramel Junior changed Backaskog to its present appearance during the years 1584-1653. Between 1680 and 1818 the Backaskog Castle was used as a Swedish colonel's residence. The Crown Prince Oscar (I) rented the castle in 1818 and assigned it to his son Karl XV, who spent each summer here from 1845 until his death in 1872. Gustav Ferlenius rented Backaskog in the year 1956 and made it a popular tourist place. Since the mid-1990s the Castle is used for conferences, festivities, representation and recreation.
