The history of Halltorps Gastgiveri 11th century. Halltorp is no doubt one of the oldest manors of Oland. In old documents Hauldtorp, together with Borgholm and Ottenby, is mentioned as one of the ancient Viking settlements of the island. 17th century. The estate had the character of a royal farm and it was at times united to Borgholm demesne of the Crown and thus made up a large estate unit. The renowned oak woods, situated between the estate and the Kalmar Sound, gave valuable oak wood to the State. At the same time it was estimated by the Vasa kings as one of the best hunting-grounds of Oland. In the wood these still remain, oaks, many hundreds of years old. There is also a remarkable grove of hornbeams, considered to be the largest in Sweden. In 1723 the former royal farm, with the right to levy taxes and to be free of interest for 20 years, was donated to major Sven Aderman in acknowledgement of his invention to discharge swift shots with muskets during the wars of King Karl XII. In 1760 Halltorp was owned by captain Edvard Liljehorn and in 1804 it still belonged to members of his family. The impressive manor, made of limestone, was probably built during the Liljehorn time. In 1820 the estate were separated and Halltorp was now owned by colonel and chamberlain A. von Franchen and baron M. Falkenberg. In the beginning of the 19th century Halltorp also comprised the estate of Ekerum, an area of 420 acres. Several crofts, such as Bullerhus by the main road and Sigfridstorp close to the harbour of Ekerum, belonged to the estate. In 1859 Halltorp was purchased by Erik Johan Rudberg, a Member of Parliament, born in 1821 and deceased in 1899. In 1895 the estate was sold to Johan Persson, landed proprietor. In the ground floor then there was an entrance hall and behind that a hall with two Swedish tile stoves. Behind the hall there were
three rooms, one of which was the
kitchen, facing the south and the two others facing the north. The
kitchen thus faced the yard. On the first floor there was a big loft with an attic at each end. In 1918 the farm was sold to the municipalities of Rapplinge, Hogsrum and Glomminge. The farm land was leased and the main building was changed into an old peoples home. In 1973, in the autumn, the old peoples home was closed. The old people were moved into a modern, much more comfortable home in Borgholm. In 1975, in April the Halltorp Inn was opened. The building had a full-scale renovation. One had, among other things, had to build in heavy girders to consolidate the old house. In May 1991 the extension to the inn was completed. The annex stretching towards Kalmar Sound comprises
25 rooms, each with the unique touch from a different Swedish province. In addition there are
conference facilities with three bright,
air-conditioned conference rooms, six
rooms for group work, two
saunas with an artesian well, a wine-tasting cellar, a winter
garden etc... The inn is now open all the year round. In 2004 a new extention of the inn was completed. The inn now has a real wine cellar and two marvellous
rooms with open fire-places and a lovely view to the Kalmarsund. Perfect surroundings to have an afternoon
tea, a
drink before
dinner or to just relax with a book. Apart from this extension we now boast a hotel
restaurant school with a top modern school
kitchen, classrooms and a small
bistro right next to the inn, where the students immediately can show what they have learned. This is where tomorrows waiters, chefs and hotel staff is educated.
