How to find Kukkolaforsen You'll find Kukkolaforsen Tourist and Conference Centre 15 kilometres north of the town of Haparanda on the Tome River. The tourist centre is tight on the river in an historic fishing area. People still fish for whitefish using the same type of long-handle nets used in the seventeenth century. During the summer you can try your hand at the noble art of fishing with these special nets with the help of one of our guides. And any fish you catch are yours to eat. Accommodations At Kukkolaforsen you can choose to stay in our hotel standard cabins or at our camping in a caravan or in a tent. The cabins hold 4-6 guests and are equipped with TV, Wi-Fi Internet, a toilet, shower and kitchenette. Dining We offer both local cuisine made with ingredients taken from the surrounding wilderness and dishes that have been inspired from around the world. Our goal is to provide you with a dining experience that delights all your senses. Tornedal cooking is influenced by both Finnish and Swedish cooking traditions. During the summers you can buy new baked rieska, a traditional un-leavened bread, at our bakery, Men Baakeri. It makes a lovely treat together with smoked fish that you can enjoy on the river bank. Restaurant Youll be able to enjoy a number local specialities in our restaurant, including fish from the region. How about fried whitefish with an herb sauce or grilled salmon, all served with a fantastic view of the rushing rapids below? Join us at Christmas when we offer our famous smorgasbord packed with home-made holiday dishes. Whitewater rafting and sauna Come experience the thrill of whitewater rafting with our experienced guides on an exciting trip along the Finnish-Swedish border. Trips can be organised for groups 24 hours a day from the time the ice melts in the spring until the river freezes again in the winter. Afterwards, enjoy our wonderfully relaxing VIP sauna. We offer four different types of sauna experiences: a Russian dry pine sauna, a Roman steam bath, a hot tub and a Tornedal smoke sauna. The fishing museum The fishing museum is located right in the middle of the historic fishing area. you can learn about the ancient art of long-handle net fishing, rafting, the wooden fishing jetties that are placed out during the summer, and other aspects of the areas fishing tradition. The fishing museum also recounts the life of the Tornedal people through the ages. Long-handle net fishing whitefish grilling We fish for whitefish with long-handle nets in the river by Kukkolaforsen from June until September. You can hire a fishing spot, a net, and a skilled guide if you want experience this ancient art first hand. Well grill your freshly caught whitefish over an open fire in the traditional Kukkola fashion.
