Introduction The Lake region is the entry to a Patagonian world of volcanos, lakes, rivers, archipelagos and glaciers. It’s a zone with the world greatest water reserves. From the mountain range to the sea it possesses a complete hidrologic structure; the snowcaps push ice-blocks or snow to the areas of rivers and lakes at the feet of the Andes, and then connect by a net of beautiful rivers and estuaries, which flow in between the foliage, sometimes hidden between the rocks and always accompanied by the songs of a bird called Chucao. Then the water settles in great lakes, which have given our region its name, finding its way through the plain valleys and the mountain range, until finally reaching the Pacific Ocean. The rivers maintain a constant water caudal all year. Characteristic are their still waters, making navigating and fishing possible. Rafting is carried out in the rivers Petrohue, Futaleufu, Fuy, San Pedro, Manso and Puelo. The Region de Los Lagos also possesses one of the greatest reserves of native forest of our planet. The experience of walking, riding horseback or resting in the middle of the woods with thousands of year old species, where evergreen forests meet with ancient alerces and a particular flora, along with
channels, lakes, volcanos and islands, creates an ideal atmosphere to reach inner withdrawal in silence and contemplation. Besides this you’ll have the opportunity of exploring and adventure. In this region you can find a variety of wild fauna : Some of the most important species are: The Pudu (the smallest deer of the world), wild cats, pumas, fox, Culpeo, Huillin, Quique and Coipo. Tipical birds are the Huala, Duck, quetro, Pato correntino, King fishers, Woodpeckers, Bandurria, Chucao, Tiuque, black-necked swans, chilean Flamencos and Humboldt penguins, while the most common fish are chilean and brown trout. The connection of different elements of the regional culture of Los Lagos currently is the result of a historical past, marked by the mixed parentages between groups of foreigns who had made contact with the native indigenous population : Mapuche, Huilliche and Chona, creating different linguistic variations, a variety of beliefs, cosmovisions and diversity of symbols. An interesting option of initiating contact with southern people is approaching places where those live who always have been here: The Mapuches and Huilliches. We can observe their houses and ancestral customs in the areas of the Valdivia province, along the coast of Osorno province and in the great island of Chiloe. To see the fortresses of Niebla, Corral, Osorno or Ancud is also a privilege, since they are the most austral fortresses built by the spanish empire in the 17th and 18th centuries. We can follow their routes from north to south, enjoying the magnificant panoramas or observe these from the enclaves chosen by the conquesters, generally with visual control over the ocean or river access.
