Restaurants in the Vicinity of Casa del Gavilan. Your stay at Casa del Gavilan includes a full breakfast. For your other meals, Cimarron has several fine dining establishments from which to choose. The Cree-Mee serves hamburgers, fries, and such as well as ice cream and soft drinks. The St. James Hotel has a formal dining room and also a bar and a coffee shop. The menu at St. James' Lambert dining room includes filet mignon and buffalo steak. Prices range from $14 to $27. For lighter fare, the Sweetwater Cafe at the St. James Hotel serves burgers, Mexican dinners, steaks, and chicken from $4.50 to $13. The Kit Carson serves sandwiches and Mexican dinners. Heck's Hungry Traveler offers trout, chicken-fried steak, burgers, steak, and Mexican dinners ranging in price from $5.50 to $14. The Porch is Cimarron's newest dining establishment and has terrific sandwiches and the best homemade pie in town. Ask about their box lunches when taking a day trip. If you are looking for a quick snack or a sweet treat, the Cimarron Art Gallery serves coffee, espresso, cappuccino, pastries, malts, milkshakes, and other ice cream delights. During the summer months, the Burrito Banquet (located underneath a wooden canopy along Highway 64 in Cimarron) serves excellent tacos and burritos. Located about 8 miles north of Cimarron, the Colfax Tavern overlooks the ghost town of Colfax. Many of the local ranchers visit the Colfax Tavern for a cold beer after a long day of working cattle. Activities in the Vicinity of Casa del Gavilan. Numerous activities can be found near Casa del Gavilan. Cimarron is a historic district and contains many old buildings including the famous St. James Hotel. Stop by the St. James to see the bullet holes in the ceiling of the bar that pay tribute to Cimarron's wilder youth. Perhaps you will get a glimpse of the ghost that haunts this old adobe hotel. Several fine shops specializing in Southwestern artwork, crafts, antiques, and souvenirs are located in Cimarron with more in Raton, about 40 minutes north on Highway 64. Several fine museums are near Casa del Gavilan. Closest is the Philmont Museum and Seton Memorial Library operated by Philmont Scout Ranch. The Philmont Museum and Setom Memorial Library contains numerous books, artifacts, and artwork by various individuals as well as a gift shop. In the old town section of Cimarron, the Old Mill Museum contains many artifacts from the early days of Cimarron including several items from Jack Nairn's life at Casa del Gavilan. The Old Mill Museum is a terrific place to get a sense of the history of the Cimarron area, so plan on spending some time looking over the many fine items on display. Villa Philmonte is an impressive collection of art and architecture and is a must see for anyone visiting the area. The Villa was donated to the Boy Scouts of America, along with Philmont Scout Ranch, by Mr. Phillips and is operated as a museum by the Boy Scouts of America. Dorsey in the late 1870s. In the mid 1880s, Senator Dorsey remodeled the mansion, adding a stone castle structure complete with gargoyles and stone-carved likenesses of his wife Helen, his brother John, and himself. Capulin Volcano National Monument. a nearly perfectly-shaped cinder cone rising more than 1200 feet above the surrounding High Plains of northeastern New Mexico, makes a great day trip from the Casa. This long-extinct volcano is has forested slopes providing habitat for mule deer, wild turkey, black bear and other wildlife. Large numbers of wildflowers bloom on the mountain each summer. A 2-mile paved road spirals to the volcano rim making Capulin Volcano one of the most accessible volcanoes in the world. Trails lead around the rim and to the bottom of the crater itself. These trails offer a rare opportunity to explore a volcano. Capulin Volcano is located 33 miles east of Raton, about an hour and fifteen minutes from Casa del Gavilan.
