The Hotel Anna Amalia has been given a name which brings with it great obligation. The name comes from the. Dutchess Anna Amalia von Sachsen. Weimar and Eisenach (1739-1807). She led, with the naming of Wieland as a prince educator in 1772 and the establishment of the;table round;, the establishment of a classical period in Weimar. The;table round; was a culturally gregarious circle, consisting of learned contemporaries, which began
meeting in 1776. These
meetings took place at the Wittum palace; Anna Amalia;s widows residence and symbolise a classical period in Weimar. The Hotel consists of three connected buildings in the Geleitstrasse. The main building with the arched entrance and two attached buildings. Directly behind the Erfurter Gateway, the gate having being torn down in 1800, is the Geleitstrasse. It is one of the four main streets leading to the city church. Goethe came from Erfurt in 1775 through this street, so that he could take up his first residence at the church square. The
garden of duchess Anna Amalia ranges from her residence, the Wittums palace, left and right along the long since carried away city wall, almost to our Hotel. The main building was built in 1792, which was before the tearing down of the Erfurt Gate, which at that time stood before it, and after the arrival of Goethe in Weimar. In 1880, in the main building Nr.12, the Hotel Chemnitius was established. In the year 1912 the writers Franz Kafka and Max Brod took up residence in this building. In the central building (Nr. 10), resided the composer Peter Cornelius (1824-1874), who was renound as one of the members in the circle of Franz Liszt. His opera; The
Barber from Bagdad;, one of the best cheerful German operas, fell victim to theatre politics aimed against Liszt. In August 2002 the Hotel Anna Amalia was established in the
centre of classical Weimar. We endeavour to cater to the guests of this beautiful and historical city, in the most tasteful way possible. From here you may open yourself to this charmingly personable city, becoming exposed to the historical personalities that have passed here throughout the ages. Personalities such as Lucas Cranach, Johann Sebastian Bach, Goethe and Schiller, Herder and Wieland, Anna Amalia and Carl August, Liszt and Cornelius, Henry van de Velde and Walter Gropius and many more;.
