The colca valley is located in one of the driest areas in the world. This area was inhabited by the ethnic groups of Collaguas and the Cabanas and in this dry and very accidental landscape, they made a green fertile valley, where many kinds of potatoes, corn (maiz) and fruits are cultivated. Around this valley there are 14 colonial villages, the spanish were here during the conquista. The condor is the largest bird in the andes. When they open their wings they can reach upto 2 meters from wing to wing. They can survive 14 days without eating. The region of Arequipa including Colca, is located in a very volcanic area, that is why there are many hot springs in different places.

What to do in Arequipa. Climbing el Misti volcano. Climbing the Misti in 2 days. We leave at 8:00am with a four wheel drive in the direction of the village Chiguata. Before we reach the village, we take a path that takes us to an altitude of 3400m. above sea level. This trip takes about one hour. From this point we start to walk to the base camp at 4500m. This climb takes about 5 hours. The next day we reach the top at 5825 after a walk of 5 or 6 hours with just a small day-pack. At the top you can enjoy the view and take some pictures of the crater before we go down to the base camp in about 1 hours. In the base camp, we will eat something, collect our things and continue our descend to the point where our transportation is waiting for us. This will take an other 1 hour. Then we drive back to Arequipa. This 2 day tour includes: We recommend you to bring: At least 4 liters of water (including 1 liter for cooking). Hat (with protection for your ears). Several layers of warm clothes. The price of this tour depends on the size of the group and the guide. We always use experienced guides, that know these mountains well. Climbing el Chachani. Climbing el Chachani volcano. Climbing the Chachani in 2 days. We leave between 8:00am and 9:00am with a four wheel drive for about 3 hours in the direction of the national reserve Aguada Blanca. At an altitude of 4900m. above sea level we leave the car to walk up to the base camp at 5300m. This climb takes about 1 to 2 hours. The next day we leave the base camp at about 4:00am. We climb up to walk in a zigzag at the front of the peak El Angel. When we reach the pass of El Angel, we walk a few kilometers on a steep slope of sand and stones or snow and ice to the Fatima. Before we can climb to the main peak Chachani, we first have to climb close to the top of the Fatima which is almost 6000m itself. From the base camp to the Chachani is about 5 to 7 hours walk. At the top of the Chachani, we enjoy the view and rest for about half an hour before we go back to the base camp. After about 3 hours we reach the base camp where we gather our belongings, eat something and go down to the starting point, where our car is waiting for us. From the base camp to the car, it takes just half an hour. The ride back to Arequipa takes about 3 hours. Crampons (depending on the season). Ice axe (depending on the season). Most items can also be rented. The price of this tour depends on the size of the group, the guide (with/without official license) and the equipment you need.
