Lovely, central hotel with parking available. Rooms were very comfortable. Quiet and comfortable with pleasant and helpful staff. This hotel has two great assets - its very convenient location and the English breakfast. Breakfast was excellent with huge tasty sausage and all the trimmings. Service was efficient. Its location is well within the city walls and walking distance of the major attractions of the town centre - big plus! Close to centre of city. Quiet location. Plenty of choice for breakfast. The four poster bed room had a lot of space and was very clean. The breakfast was excellent! Mrs Cooper, September 07. Near to city, very nice staff. Can recommend it fully. Mrs Innes, September 07. Rooms are comfortable and clean, staff are friendly and the breakfasts are excellent. Mrs Griffiths, August 07. The room was lovely and clean and fresh feeling. The hotel was within easy walking distance of York (about 10 mins walk from the Shambles). The breakfast was excellent (very filling!!). There is a small bar to relax in and unwind at the end of the day. I would stay here again have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. Sunday 18th June 2006. There are few places in Britain that can rival the magical beauty of York, a compact old city encircled by three miles of medieval wall and honeycombed with a maze of medieval streets and hidden alleyways - all with fascinating stories. The four main entrances to the city centre are still dominated by the imposing great 'bars' or gates of Bootham, Micklegate, Monkgate and Walmgate. York Minster is a magnificent gothic cathedral which has towered over the city for over 800 years. It is the largest medieval structure in the United Kingdom and contains England's greatest concentration of medieval stained glass. Its grandeur and surpassing beauty attracts visitors from all over the world. There are also many other historic buildings, museums and other reminders of York's past (See section). But these are only part of York's many attractions. The compact city centre provides tempting shops of all types and a thriving open air market and, to add to the pleasure of browsing and buying, the whole area is free of traffic for most of the shopping day, Sunday is included. The River Ouse and Foss provide attractive riverside walks, as well as boat trips and there are parks you can share with the squirrels, peacocks and friendly people of York. Food and drink are an essential part of every visit and you will find plenty to choose from in York. There are restaurants catering for almost every taste, plus a wide range of friendly cafes. As for pubs, you will be spoilt for choice and most of them serve good Yorkshire fare as well as traditional drinks, including locally brewed ales.

York is one of the Worlds most fascinating cities. The history of York, Capital of the North and Second City of the Realm, is the History of England. York began in AD71, built as a fortress against the Brigantes tribe by the Roman 9th Legion. Under the Romans it grew into an important City named Eboracum. It was the Vikings who gave York its name, derived from jorvik or Yorwick, their brief but flourishing kingdom. It was under the rule of the Normans that the city became a vital centre of government, commerce and religion for the North. By the start of the Tudor Age, York was at its zenith. The magnificent Minster had been completed after work lasting 250 years and the City enjoyed prosperity and robust civic pride. It was not until the 18th Century that there was any marked change in the City's outward character, when it became a fashionable resort and centre. Georgian elegance added to its architectural attractions. In the following century, the coming of the railway marked the start of a new era of growth and prosperity. In York you can become a part of English history, viewing Roman remains at the Yorkshire Museum, sampling the Viking way of life at the Jorvik Viking Centre, defending the city from attack at Clifford's Tower, conducting business at the 14th Century Merchant Adventures Hall, imagining yourself a prosperous Georgian Merchant in Fairfax House, or window shopping in a typical Victorian street at the Castle Museum. You can even try your hand at some DIY archaeology at the ARC. The Friargate Wax Museum recreates scenes from many eras of York's history, while the darker episodes of its past are on chilling display at the York Dungeon. Then there is the story of trains at the National Railway Museum (the largest museum of its kind in the world) and some stirring military history at the Regimental Museum. There are many ways to explore this unique City... take a stroll along the City walls, cruise the picturesque River Ouse or explore other parts of York by taking one of the many guided tours, walks or ghost trails. Wherever you go in York you will find evidence of its history and make memorable discoveries of your own.
