The village of High Hawsker is situated in between Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay, two and a half miles from each, and is ideally situated to explore the area. The village has a pleasant atmosphere, and the locals are very friendly people. A drink and a meal can be enjoyed in the Hare Hounds Inn, which is about 50 yards from the house. There also is a games-room that can be used by the whole family. The village hall which is situated about 100 yards from the property, has a playground. Historic Whitby with its beautiful harbour and little alleys and streets is one of the most atmospheric towns in the area. The town is built on the mouth of the river Esk, the only salmon river in Yorkshire, and has strong connections with Captain Cook, Dracula, and the photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe. Whitby is also famous for its jet (a semi-precious stone, which is a pure and hard form of fossilised wood of the monkey puzzle tree). Jet has been collected and used in jewellery for thousands of years, but it really became fashionable in the Victorian area. Queen Victoria herself used jet mourning jewellery, which contributed to a greater public demand for this type of jewellery. Today there are still a few jet workshops in town and jet jewellery can be bought in several shops in Whitby. Visitors to Whitby will find that it is a place they want to come back to. What you can not miss on your visit to Whitby is Whitby Abbey, which is a magnificent site on your entry into the area. If you like museums you will enjoy a visit to one of Whitby's many museums. Among others, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, the Whitby Museum (a treasure throve of Whitby's past), and the lifeboat museum. Whitby also has a number of Galleries, which are worth a visit. Other places to visit and things to do. Other places, which are certainly worth a visit are, Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay, Scarborough, Danby Moors Centre, Falling Foss - a 30ft (9 meter) waterfall, Grosmont from which the steam train to Pickering runs, etc. etc. The area around High Hawsker is ideal for cycling or walking. There are many public footpaths and bridleways. A cycle hire centre is just a short walk from Grange Farm. Other activities within a 5 miles radius are Rowing, Canoeing, Swimming, Golfing, Riding, Fishing. For more information about what there is to do in the area go to the. Grange Farm holiday cottage primarily provides a base for family groups to come and enjoy the peace of the little North Yorkshire village of High Hawsker, and the surrounding area. We therefore exercise caution when dealing with enquiries from large adult groups. This caution we are sure you will understand is necessary to ensure that not only the prospective client is fully aware of the situation in the village but also to ensure that the every day life of the village and that of our neighbours is not disturbed. We would ask you when filling in the booking form to give information regarding the purpose of your visit and the intended activities. On a more practical note, we have in the past experienced problems with adult parties when individual members of the group have arrived each in their own vehicles. As you will see from the web site, we provide parking for four vehicles only and due to the lay out of the village extra on road parking is not an option. Car pooling will have to be arranged within your group.
