Devon House is a small, family-run B B offering guests clean and delightful accommodation and is located directly at the top of the village, on the main route to the beautiful. Our fine Edwardian building, circa 1900, still has many original features which maintain its character but has been modernised and decorated to a very high standard. Free parking is available between September and March. Our rates are £30.00 per person per night, based on two sharing. A supplement applies to a single occupancy. Discounts are available when stays of more than three nights are booked. Please to enquire about a booking and to see if we can meet your needs. We welcome young people over the age of 12; sorry no pets and we are of course a strictly No Smoking establishment. Traditionally, the breakfast part of a B B is one of the highpoints of your stay. We serve a full English Breakfast and are pleased to cater for vegetarians. We can provide a packed lunch for a small charge, for those who wish to get away from it all through the day. Please to view our breakfast menu.
Robin Hoods Bay, situated in the dramatic and rugged scenery of the North Yorkshire coastline, is probably one of the most picturesque fishing villages in the country. The Bay lies 15 miles from Scarborough and 5 miles from Whitby. Devon House is also close to Goathland (home to the T.V. series Heartbeat). The very popular Wainwrights Coast to Coast walk also finishes here, and is on route for the Cleveland Way walk. We are close to all amenities including buses, pubs, post office etc. Fishing is no longer an essential income for the village, which is still a thriving community, but now the main income is from the many tourists coming to discover its historic charm and the spectacular views over the wide bay. The change in the Bay's fortunes commenced with the coming of the railway in 1885, making the area accessible to tourists. The railway closed in 1965, but by this time the Bay had established itself as an expanding community, and continued attracting many visitors. The village is set amongst a network of steeply sloping streets, steps and alleyways and retains a strong historic link with the sea, reminiscent of days gone by with fishermen in small boats and smugglers dodging the excise men. There are stories which associate the village with Robin Hood and the outlaw, including a legend that he fled here and disguised himself as a local fisherman to avoid arrest. This is highly unlikely as it was not until the 15th century that the coastal community was established, long after the time of the famous outlaws of Sherwood Forest. http://www.robin-hoods-bay.co.uk/html/information.htm.
