kitchen and comfy
lounge will make you feel at home. Several of the staff are qualified
tour guides, and are always ready to help with tips and suggestions. Olomouc is an attractive university city of 100,000 people on the
banks of the Morava River, halfway between Prague and Krakow, and just 3 hours north of Bratislava and Vienna. Its 1000-year old
centre is the second-largest historic zone in the country (after Prague). The riverside parks, lively squares and cobbled lanes are alive with soaring cathedrals, colourful palaces whimsical fountains. Oft-forgotten Moravia is a beautiful historic land that most travellers have never heard of, let alone explored. Castles, caves, lakes, mountains and historic towns are all within an hour of Olomouc. You'll encounter the famously friendly, outgoing people, flourishing folk traditions, and you're guaranteed of paying the prices the locals pay, because there's almost no mass tourism. Poets' Corner Hostel
Most of our guests are surprised to discover what a broad range of things there are to see and do in Olomouc. The city itself is filled with majestic cathedrals and palaces, grand squares and parks, and more fountains and monuments than any comparable city in Europe. Food-lovers have their best opportunity to sample traditional Moravian
cuisine, not to mention the cakes and desserts reminiscent of the old imperial capital, Vienna. Guests exploring the University-town nightlife usually make one
trip to the notorious aeroplane
bar, before returning to some of the more highly recommended places on our exclusive treasure-map guide. Football Ice hockey are the spectator sports of choice while it’s swimming and cycling for the more energetic. But don’t just take our word for it; here’s what others have had to say; …the university town of Olomouc is surely it's highlight, providing the truest sense of what Prague would be like without the crowds: In a word, fabulous. Miraculously missing a slot on the received tourist A-list, Olomouc's broody streets offer some of the finest cityscapes in Central Europe as well as a clutch of it's least visited sights. …Effortlessly juggling the serenity of it's religious past with the vivacious character of a university town, Olomouc is one of the country's most beautiful, interesting and exciting cities all at once. Lonely Planet - Czech and Slovak Republics, 2004 Today, Olomouc (OH-lo-mohts; pop 103,372) is the echo of what Prague once was before it was engulfed by hordes of tourists. The historic capital of Moravia, Olomouc embodies the best aspects of the Czech Republic. By day, locals enjoy the rebuilt town
center where Baroque architecture lines cobblestone paths. By night, students keep the clubs thumping well into the morning light. Let's Go, Eastern Europe, 2004 “They say we are going to Olomouc, and Olomouc is a very decent town.” Tolstoy, War and Peace “
Tel Aviv, Agadir, Taroudant and Olomouc” REM(Stipe, Buck, Mills)-Disappear
