The History of Meyer House ~. The history of this beautiful and historically significant Victorian home begins with the founding of Davis, West Virginia, the town in which this home is located... The boisterous lumber business of the late 1800's and early 1900's called Davis home. The high plateau consisted of extensive forests of spruce and hardwoods. US Senator and industrialist, Henry Gassaway Davis, paid between $5 and $15 per acre for the land which is now the town of Davis. Shortly after the land purchase, the construction of Meyer House began. Davis' plan was to have the house serve as a showplace for his numerous business ventures, as well as be the home of his extremely important 'second in command'. Meyer House as it was in the late 1800's. Construction of this gracious Victorian home was completed in 1886, but the person to fill the role of 'second in command' proved hard to find. After six years, Herman Meyer was hired for the job and he, accompanied by his wife and six children, moved in and made this house their home. For the next 70 years, generations of the Meyer family continued to reside in this grand Victorian home. Herman and Mollie Meyer's children; Frederick (age 4) and Mary (age 2). Meyer House is superbly constructed and is a prime example of American Victorian architecture. This icon of local history still serves its role of showplace with grace and dignity, as it did over the years for the Davis Empire. The many spacious rooms and wonderfully detailed woodwork throughout the home add warmth to the late century charm of the surroundings. All of the wood used in construction of the home was timbered locally, including oak, red maple, and splendid red cherry. No expense was spared in the construction of this home; even after the construction of this wonderful home was completed, a special bathtub was ordered and installed for the over six-foot tall frame of Herman Meyer. This bathtub, which was once the largest bathtub in the region, is still in place today. Meyer House in the 1930's. (the X on the second-floor window marks the room where Mary was born). The historic significance of this house is truly remarkable. One can only imagine the consequential events that must have transpired in this home; the deliberations and decisions that may well have effected the events of the day could have taken place in the all-important territory of the study, where cigar burns are still evident today on the cherry mantel piece over the fireplace, in what is now the Peach Guest Room. We welcome you into our charming home, which still holds most of it's originality and Victorian flair. Meyer House offers three spacious guest rooms, each with it's own distinctive history, charm and grace. ~ Additional photos are on display within the residence ~. Jon and Cindy Robeson are the current proprietors. They left their lives in Northern Virginia to live their dream of running a B B in the beautiful mountains of West Vriginia in November 2003.
