La Mamounia in history. If it weren't to see the exceptional sights of Marrakech, why would anyone ever leave La Mamounia? At La Mamounia, everything has been created to take advantage of our glorious location. The magic begins with breakfast on your private terrace. As sunlight streams onto the crisp linen tablecloth, draw your gaze to the horizon where the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas mountains seem to float atop the desert valley. Equally magical is the tranquil perfection of our gardens. Every day, forty gardeners prune, plant and lavish care on our thousands of flowers, bushes and trees as well as our vegetable gardens. And don't forget the birds... finches, nightingales, warblers and more - all at home in the paradise called La Mamounia. As the sun sets, the murmur of frogs croaking in our lily ponds becomes a natural symphony - the perfect accompaniment to a cocktail on the Bar du Soleil terrace. Since the 1920's, the name La Mamounia has been synonymous with legend. Every visitor to La Mamounia becomes part of the legend, a component of our reputation as one of the world's grandest, finest and most exquisite hotels.

Travel professionals. It is the most beautiful place in the world British Prime Minister Winston Churchill writing to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, urging him to come to Marrakech at the close of World War II's Casablanca Conference, 1943. Opened in 1923 and located in the very heart of Marrakech, La Mamounia is set amid idyllic gardens that are almost three hundred years old and surrounded by the city's 12th century ochre-colored ramparts. For 80 years, La Mamounia has emphasized the great traditions of Moroccan hospitality. We are considered a classic example of the great age of grand hotels of the 1930's, a unique blend of Art Deco and Moorish design. Conceived in 1922 with one hundred rooms, La Mamounia was enlarged in 1946, 1950 and 1953. In 1986 we undertook a massive, nine-month re-creation, bringing us to today's level of magnificence. In 2000 and 2001, every guest room was updated and redesigned - combining a true Moroccan ambiance with every 21st-century convenience. La Mamounia's name derives from our gardens, known three centuries ago as Arset el Mamoun, named for Prince Moulay Mamoun, son of Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah, ruler of Marrakech in the 18th century. Here in the heart of this Imperial city, royalty, connoisseurs and celebrities gather at the legend called La Mamounia to relax in an atmosphere that combines history with enchantment and luxury. La Mamounia closed on July 1st, 2006 for a major renovation under the direction of noted designer, Jacques Garcia. An even more beautiful La Mamounia will be ready to open in 2008. We very much look forward to welcoming you. Thank you so much for visiting our website.

La Mamounia - French version. Conferences and Seminars. Boutiques at La Mamounia. Weather in Marrakech

Discovering the magic of the Imperial city of Marrakech is like peeling an orange. It must be accomplished with care, with patience. Start with a carriage ride around the ochre-colored ramparts... Stop at the Bab ed Dabbagh, gateway to the tanneries where, in a centuries-old process, animal skins are immersed in a vast network of dyeing vats - each with its own color, its own powerful scent. Plunge into the Medina - the walled city of Marrakech - the most exotic and sensual in all Morocco. You'll marvel at the sights and sounds of Marrakech... in the Souk Larzal, the wool market... in the Souk El Maazi, the goatskin market... in the Souk El Zarbia, the carpet market... in the Souk Haddadine - the market of the iron workers. You'll be dazzled by the multicolored fabrics hanging in the Souk of the Wool-Dyers... Discover the secret harmony of the Koutoubia Minaret. Even older than the Giralda Tower in Seville, what is its secret? We have the answer: the perfect balance that comes from a construction five times taller than its breadth. Medieval architects always aimed for this magic equation... And then you must be sure to come to the Jemaa el Fna square at twilight. This is the magical hour, when all of Marrakech seems to descend on the city's central plaza, creating a tableau vivant straight out of the 1001 Nights. This is arguably the world's most exotic moment - a tumult of acrobats, boxers, story-tellers, snake charmers, water carriers, juice-squeezers, henna-painters... unforgettable street theater that captivates every visitor.
