Hotel Eldhestar - Eldhestar's Environmental Policy. Eldhestar is dedicated to the principles of ecotourism. We believe that the natural environment and the wilderness of Iceland are unique assets that need protection. Eldhestar considers the environmental impact of all its decisions: those concerning the new hotel, new trails, tours, and facilities. Therefore, we have worked to make the Hotel eco laballed with the Nordic eco label. In July 2002 Hotel Eldhestar became the first hotel in Iceland to receive. For Hotel Eldhestar, this specifically means the following:; We are working toward economic use of resources, such as water and electricity.; We are working on reducing the discharge of substances that damage the environment.; We select environment-friendly products and furniture in all possible areas.; We motivate and make demands on our suppliers regarding environment-friendly products and delivery.; We motivate our guests and make it easy for them to help us reduce environmental impact.; We keep our guests, suppliers, staff and owners informed about our environmental efforts.; We prevent environmental problems and set a good example in complying with environmental legislation. The 10 basic rules of Eldhestar's environmental policy. Prepare all guests for each encounter with sensitive ecosystems, geological formations, native plants, and animals, and train them to minimize any negative impacts when visiting these sensitive areas. Encourage small-sized group tours to minimize environmental impact and provide enough guides to maintain adequate control of the group. Avoid crowded, over-visited, environmentally degraded sites. Train guides and staff in how to reduce environmental damage by tour groups and apply environmentally sound practices to all Eldhestar operations. Educate guides thoroughly in ecology, geology, plants and animals, equipment, safety, local practices, and Eldhestar environmental policies. Warn guests specifically not to take samples or souvenirs, as their removal may do lasting damage to sensitive sites. Work with local people and all appropriate governmental authorities to foster sound environmental procedures at Vellir, Eldhestar's home farm, and at all tour sites. Follow sound ecologic practices for recycling and waste management; use renewable resources and locally grown, organic products, and offer homemade cuisine. Assess the ecological and environmental impact of all new buildings, trails, and tours. Minimizing environmental impact has been a major part of the planning for the new hotel opening in 2002. Your Wake-up Call to Nature... At Hotel Eldhestar you can expect to get an unrequested wake-up call from a golden plover or other birds in the area. Actually the unrequested wake-up call is part of our policy. Eldhestar's goal is to show visitors to Iceland its unique wilderness. Therefore, it was a natural step for us to develop an environmental policy. It is important for us to keep the country as clean as it has always been. When designing the hotel, we drew inspiration from the colors and materials in Icelandic nature as well as from Icelandic culture. We wanted to let genuine craftmanship and old tradition inspire the interior, in a house built with modern ecological technology. The goal was to create a warm and cosy atmosphere. Around the hotel are fields, meadows and just Icelandic nature. We can enjoy its unique silence. The windows are big and increase the feeling that you are close to nature, also when you are inside.

We have dedicated our hotel to the Icelandic horse - our most useful servant for centuries. Before Iceland had bridges and roads, the country was difficult to cross, and the horse played a big part in making life possible in this country. On the walls of Hotel Eldhestar there are old photos and texts telling the history and reminding us about the imporanace of the Icelandic horse through ages. This you can also experience on Eldhestar's longer riding tours - in the same way as the Icelanders have done for thousands of years.

At Hotel Eldhestar and Eldhestar's farm you can expect a challenging but varied job with a lot of contact with humans and horses. We have no vacancies until February, but if you are interested in working at the farm/hotel in the spring, please send us a letter of interest with appropriate references.
