Riad Louna is a traditional guest house in the Medina, or old walled city, of Fez. Riad Louna receives you in the finest Fassi tradition of hospitality in a beautiful setting. Surrounding the courtyard fountain stand orange and lemon trees. Around the garden are the guest suites, with massive doors of carved cedar wood, each four meters in height. Upstairs, two terraces provide panoramic views of the Medina and surrounding mountains, with comfortable seating open to the breeze. The Riad is decorated with traditional glazed tile mosaic (known as Zellij), carved plaster and cedar ceilings. Together, these elements characterize classical Arabic-Islamic architecture and design in Morocco. Riad Louna was fully restored in 2001. The house is in perfect harmony with the surrounding Medina of Fez, whitch had been declared an international cultural heritage site by UNESCO. Riad Louna is located near the Medina's main gate, Bab Boujloud. It is easily accessed by car and public transportation, while still enjoying the seclusion of the Medina. The narrow street leading to the Riad is next to the magnificent Medersa Bounania, a medieval college that is currently being restored to its architectural splendor. The Riad is also near Sidi Azouz, one of Fez' oldest Hammams, or traditional baths. In the Riad, you will feel the profound calm and freshness of the garden in the midst of the old city, where no noise disturbs the quiet music of the fountain. You will be received at Riad Louna by the Belgian owners and their Moroccan staff. Together they offer you a peaceful harbor in the Medina. They respect the Fassi tradition of charming hospitality and refinement, combined with a European sense of comfort and familiarity. The Riad contains three suites adjoining the courtyard garden, one smaller room, and small upstairs suite, or Messria. All rooms have private bathrooms, luxuriously designed with walls of Tadelakt, in the tradition of Marrakesh. The Riad can house up to twelve guests at one time. This limited capacity gives the guest a sense of intimacy that encourages social evenings in the garden or on the terrace, with lively conversations over a cup of fragrant mint tea. In the morning, guests enjoy a traditional Moroccan breakfast in the shade of the garden in the dining room, or on the rooftop terrace. Dear Jeane Pierre, I wanted to write and thank you and your staff for providing a very comfortable and enjoyable visit for me and my family while we were in Fez. We would gladly recommend others to stay in the Riad Louna. In particular though, I wanted to bring to your personal attention a staff member who excelled in his work. I meant to tell you this yesterday, but forgot to in the process of trying to get the credit card machine to work. The employee I refer to has been at the Riad Louna only a short while and he was an English Literature student at the University. He is married, seemed to be about 28-30 years old, and has young children. I believe his name had two syllables and started with either J or W (Wahib or Jawed I think??). This fine young man made a big, positive impact on my whole family. He has a true heart of a servant, was very friendly and helpful, and you should know that he is very loyal to you and the Riad Louna. It was clear to all of us that his main goal was to see that your guests left Fez with a very high opinion of your Riad. He was also quite honest in my opinion. I am taking the time to write this note because I also manage people in my work. As a manager myself, I know the value of having honest, loyal, hard working employees on my team. We had many good experiences in Morocco (plus a few disappointing ones), but the best experience of all the people we met was this fine young man (and my wife and two teenage sons agree).
