Salvador is known all over the world as a hub for the arts and music of Brazil.;Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos; means;Saviour of the Bay of All Saints; and it was first inhabited by native Indians, then conquered by Portuguese and further populated by African slavesīdescendants. The mixture of diverse origins gave rise to a culture rich in colours and flavors that are unique and magical and can only be experienced here. The pilgrimage to the Church of Bonfim, the gifts to Iemanja (Goddess of the Ocean), the beauty of Ile Aiye, Male de Bale, Filhos de Gandhi and so many other Afro-Brazilian, the rhythms of Olodum and Timbalada, the novels by Jorge Amado, the movies by Glauber Rocha, the poetry of Castro Alves, the paintings of Valenca, Caribe and Jenner, the songs of Bahian superstars Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Daniela Mercury and Ivete Sangalo, all these are examples of the diversity and cultural wealth of this city. In streets and plazas, old and new, in museums, art galleries, theaters, parks, libraries, churches, convents, and colonial palaces, in the traditional handicrafts at the Mercado Modelo, the color ful murals of the seaport, in the innovative mosaics of Bel Borba... Salvador is magical melting pot whose customs and traditions give testimony of a culture that is authentically Brazilian.
