A Quaint Little Drinking Town with a Fishing Problem. There are quite a few
bars in the area and many of them are justly famous for their live music. Below is a partial listing of clubs and their specials, the guitar indicates live music. 19 1/2 Saint George St. Sitting under big live oak trees watching tourists and sipping a cold one is only part of the Mill Top's popularity. Every day of the week from 1PM until closing, there is live music. Next to the tiny
bar is a small dance floor where the performers have entertained patrons for over 40 years. It's an eclectic blend of musicians who play mostly traditional folk music. Dollar bills by the handful are stapled on hand-hewn beam walls. The casual atmosphere extends inside to the high, raftered ceilings. Tuesdays: $2 cover for the band, $2.50 Tall Draft. Friday and Saturday $1 cover. Stogies, 34 Charlotte Street. Stogies Blues and Jazz
Club is a blues and jazz
club where you can catch live jazz and blues nightly starting at 9pm. It's probably St. Augustine's only cigar emporium and tobacconist, with its signature hand-rolled cigars. At Stogie's, there is a wine and port
bar. It's a place where Guinness, Bass, Harp and Hefe Weissen are on tap. You also have a choice of 50 imported beers, cappuccino and espresso. Mi Casa, St. George Street. I never understood why they close so early...maybe it's in their lease. Cozy outdoor
patio with live music most weekends. Tradewinds, 124 Charlotte St. It's here that you'll hear high-energy classic rock and blues rock and enjoy a beverage or two in a great atmosphere. Rockers of a classic bent can get their fill at the biker-friendly Trade Winds. It's the perfect place for ladies to go if you want to get hit on by 55-year old (and older) drunks. Drafts: Only typical American beers. Happy Hour 4-8 PM $2 Drafts. New English
pub with great atmosphere and no smoking inside. They have the best fish and chips in town (go early, it usually sells out every day). They have a happy hour, but it's no bargain. The couple who own it are very nice though! Yummy Scotch Eggs! Nice small place on Orange street near the City Gates. Sandwiches served until 1AM. AIA Alehouse, Corner of King and Menendez. This is one of my personal favorites for their very tasty brews, they also have good food ($8-$20). Ask at the
Office for a coupon good for 10% your meal! Happy Hour 4-7PM M-F $2.25 drafts of in-house microbrew. I highly recommend the 'Boniachos' which is an appetizer but a meal in itself. The Mango Shrimp is probably best avoided and it comes with the most tasteless onion rings in existence. You also get roughly $3 off the wings (yummm). New place on the Island, not reviewed. St. George's Tavern,116 Saint George Street BEST PRICES ANYWHERE. This is definitely a local
bar. Great Juke Box tunes. Guinness and Sam Adams ale on tap.
Drink specials every night. Gets really smoky between 10pm and 1AM. Bring your gas mask. Tuesday 8PM - close is 2 for 1 night. Wednesday 50 cent domestic drafts ($3 pitchers). Thursday Ladies night with 2 for 1 for the ladies. Friday, Happy Hour All Day. Hostellers at 2-4-1 Night. Primarily a
restaurant, but has a
bar. Nice outside
courtyard and a table or two on a
balcony overlooking the bay. In the map that we distribute is a 10% off coupon! Happy Hour 4-7PM $1 Hurricanes. Scarlet O'Hara's, 70 Hypolita St. Some
drink specials, but since we've experienced rude service here, we haven't been back in a LOOOOOONG while.
Cafe De Noel, 212 Charlotte Street. French Pastries the old fashioned way...good
lunch spot. Largest selection of beers in town, but at a price. Good place to go to have a beer and actually hear each other talk. Gigglin' Gator, King Street. This is another local
bar. Our New Favorite: Pizza Time! Here Dominic takes a Cheese Pie out of the oven.. See my review on
Trip Advisor. Popular with students, JJ's offers an array of sandwiches, none costing over $6. Sun-Thurs til 6:30PM, Fri-Sat til 9PM. Corner of Treasury and Spanish.
Cafe Maya, Hypolita just up from Charlotte. Authentic Mexican food. Great mole sauce! Local Heros (WooHoo!!! Local favorite). Hot open-faced subs, great salads, Best deal (#1) in
breakfast, (burrito for $2.50!). The White Lion, 20 Cuna Street. The White Lion is a
restaurant and
pub and sits in an enviable location across from the Fort, with a great view of the fort and bay. Happy Hour M-F 4-7. $1.50 domestic drafts, reduced prices on well
drinks. (upscale dining ~$20 per person). Even if you don't eat
dinner at the Raintree you can go their for dessert
bar. BOYCOTT ACAPULCO!!!! A former guest here, Patrick is from South Africa. He came here to work on his summer vacation as many foreign college kids do. Unfortunately he ended up at Acapulco
Restaurant on Menendez drive. There all the employees spoke Spanish, so he was mostly silent all day. They made him work a split shift which used up most of his day, and they asked him to work overtime without paying him overtime wages. Patrick left the job there to go work for McDonalds where he was much happier. Acapulco on the other hand, refused to pay him the wages it owed to him. I went with him once to talk to a manager and he said that hed have to talk to another manager.the one that told him to talk to him in the first place. So they just didnt pay himWe looked at going to small claims court, but that would have cost about $90!!! My aim is to tell everyone to boycott Acapulco and in the end to cost them hundreds of times more in
business than the $254 they owe Patrick.
You'll be wanting the directions to me treasure eh? Click on the picture above to enlarge it. Link to Google Map (Will open in separate Window). BEWARE! if you get onto the Bridge of Lion's ---you've gone too far --- You may also conceivably end up on A1A headed into town, in that case, turn right just before the light near the bridge, then take an immediate right onto Charlotte street. Private Room guests, we have
room for 5 cars right next to the building, on Treasury Street (we assume no liability for falling pecans!! or anything else for that matter...) If eveyone has a minivan or a suburban, space will be tight. We ask that you park all the way forward as far as you can go if possible.
Parking is notoriously hard to find in St. Augustine! Directly behind the Inn is a Public Metered
Parking Lot. The meters operate Monday-Saturday 8AM (Sharp!) to 6PM. They cost 25 cents per hour (!) with a two hour max.
Parking in this lot is free on Sundays and Holidays. There is a new City
Parking Garage next to the main visitor's
center at Cordova and Orange. There rates are $1.50 per hour.
Parking from 5PM to 7AM on Monday-Friday, 7 AM onwards on Saturday, and all day Sunday and Holidays (about $6) in the Wachovia lot in front of our building. From the St. Augustine. The GREYHOUND Bus Station has moved relative to the old guidebooks!! It is located 2.5 miles away from the hostel. As of yet there is no public transportation from the station to St. Augustine. A check with Comfort Cab revealed that the cost of a
taxi journey from the Bus Station to the Hostel is $5.50. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR GREYHOUND TRAVELERS. Walking: If you insist on walking from Greyhoundturn left on Highway 1 (at the Checkers
Restaurant) and then turn right at the next light (King Street), on your right will be a 'Lil Champ' market if you should need any groceries (it's the closest market to the hostel), go five blocks. taxi (~$5.75) to 32 Treasury Street. So far I'm not aware of any public transportation between Palatka and St. Augustine besides Greyhound. And that Greyhound goes through Jacksonville! One Aussie recently took a cab to cover the distance at a cost of $50! You can of course hitch, and it shouldn't take too long to get a ride, especially if you have a sign, and look semi-respectable.
