Back to Braefield Homepage. Scenes of Portpatrick... This old seaside town was once the ferry port to Northern Ireland, with a railway station at the north side of its inner harbour. The expense of maintaining the harbour defences on a coast storm-wracked in winter, led to Stranraer in Loch Ryan being preferred, despite the longer sea journey. Portpatrick is now a favoured seaside town for tourists, but its old importance is still recognised by the stationing of an RNLI lifeboat and base, as well as the heavy use of the harbour by yachts and fishing vessels. In many ways, Portpatrick resembles a Cornish fishing village, with the steep descent to the house-fringed harbour. You can enjoy the scenic walks along the clifftops or visit the nearby Logan Botanical
Gardens, one of many
gardens in the area. The Southern Upland Way starts just about 100 yards from our front door. Portpatrick was the filming location for Two Thousand Acres of Sky on BBC 1. The island scenes were filmed down the coast at Port Logan, about 10 miles to the south. Built to a design by Thomas Telford, the harbour at Port LOgan was proposed as a replacemernt for Portpatrick, bu the extra distance by land made it unpopular. For some time Irish cattle boats used to land their cargoes there, but now only a handful of leisure craft use the silted-up harbour. Back to Braefield Guesthouse Homepage
